  2. Thesis/Claim Formula Prompt #1 Thesis/Claim: The main theme in Speak is __________________, and this is shown through the motifs of _________ and _________. Prompt #2 Thesis: The two symbols that teach readers most about Melinda’s character are _________ and _________ . OR The symbols of __________ and ___________ represent Melinda’s _________________ throughout the novel.

  3. Topic Sentences • In this essay, topic sentences literally split the thesis in half: • Prompt #1 Thesis/Claim: • The main theme in Speak is __________________, and this is shown through the motifs of _________ and _________. • BP#1 Topic Sentence: • The ____________ theme is shown through the motif of ____________ . • BP#2 Topic Sentence: • The ____________ theme is also shown through the motif of ____________ . • Prompt #2 Thesis/Claim: • The two symbols that teach readers most about Melinda’s character are _________ and _________ . • BP#1 Topic Sentence: • The first symbol that teaches readers about Melinda’s character is _________ . • BP#2 Topic Sentence: • The second symbol that teaches readers about Melinda’s character is _________. • They tell readers what the entire paragraph will be about (almost like a one-sentence summary)

  4. Evidence • Find your evidence prior to working on the setup and reasoning; it’s easier, I promise  • Evidence must come from the text (quote or narration), and it must include a speaker, a present-tense speaking verb, and a page number: • Melinda states, “QUOTE” (47). • Mr. Freeman yells, “QUOTE!” (92). • Ivy asks Melinda, “QUOTE?” (96). • Melinda tells Rachel, “QUOTE”, and Rachel angrily replies, “QUOTE!” (92).

  5. Reasoning • Reasoning is an area for you to LITERALLY explain why you gave the evidence you did. • Ask yourself: • HOW and WHY does your evidence prove your topic sentence? • Make sure your reasoning is at least two sentences (I would prefer more if you can) and uses KEY WORDS from your topic sentence: • Topic Sentence: • The gap between the rich and poor theme is shown through the motif of Bob’s rings. • Reasoning (with key words underlined): • Bob’s rings function similarly to the Soc’s expensive cars since the rings in this story represent the power that accompanies wealth. Not only is Johnny fearful of Bob because he is a Soc, but he is also scared since he knows that Bob is part of the wealthier, and therefore more powerful, gang. This fear of Bob’s rings undoubtedly creates the gap between the rich and poor theme in this novel since the greasers fear the Socs.
