  1. CNC Custom Drink Coaster Design & Manufacturing Challenge Design Team: • Matthew Wykoff & Kristen Ward (Engineering Instructors & Curriculum Innovators) • IED & CIM Spring 2014Student Designers • Mel Radford: Senior Research & Development Engineer Advisor Project Timeline: 1/27/14 – 2/21/2014

  2. CNC Custom Drink Coaster Design & Manufacturing Challenge1. PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION • Client: VAOE Stakeholders • Designers: VAOE StudentsProblem Statements: • VAOE needs corporate support for more advanced technological training and resources in order to help prepare our students for 21st century careers. • Project material costs for 4” x 4” x .5” per student equals approximately .41 cents per piece. • VAOE students currently have limited or no technology skills relative to computer aided design and computer numeric control programming, 3D rapid prototyping & milling machine operation necessary for entry level positions in a manufacturing environment. • Solution Statements: • Engage VAOE corporate candidate partners in Engineering Education reform by extending invitations to our regular advisory board meetings. • Raise funds as a VAOE student leadership team to purchase advanced technology and training resourcesrelative to basic and advanced design and production experiences. • Train students how to design and manufacture a basic drink coaster prototype using classroom resources such as PLTW curriculum, CAD & CNC programming, 3D printing & milling machine technology in 4 weeks. • Strengthen stakeholders and corporate candidate partner relationships by gifting custom prototypes to show appreciation and evidence of student skill exposure & performance. • Constraints: • Must be designed < W=4” x D=4” x H=.5” volume of space • Must be made out of cost and quality efficient material (i.e oak) • Must be a simple design (↑Complex Shapes ↑Cost) • Must be safe for all users (i.e. no sharp edges) • Must be completed for NC-TSA Regional Competition Date (2.21.14) • Design process must be documented on PowerPoint H W D
