  2. What is an Ident? • An ident is basically a channel identifying themselves and differentiating themselves from other channels so that people recognise them. They do this by either a call sign or a brand name for their channel to satisfy requirements of licensing authorities, a form of branding their channel. In the UK a station identification clip is played between programmes, usually complimenting the channel logo and is followed by a consistent announcer who introduces the upcoming programme and sometimes advertise other programmes. Most broadcasters use a range of idents purposely around the theme or branding of the channel. • There are many range of idents depending on the channel and their target audience. For a channel that is all about sports, they would most probably have an ident that is related to sports because tells their target audience what the channel is about and their main focus. An ident is a very important aspect of a channel because I can determine how many viewers a channel gets, their audience have to be able to recognise • The quality of the channel ident differs depending on how many views they get. For example, Sky Box Office only gets 33,000

  3. BBC1 Branding: BBC One is one of the main flagship channels in UK, it was launched on 2nd November 1936. BBC are the only broadcasters that do not have adverts in between their programmes, so they have to make sure that their idents are unique and can be remembered. BBC One creates idents that reflects and brands the channel’s identity and purpose. BBC1 uses a range of different idents because it’s a mass audience channel, so this means they can not have a specific type of ident so that they don’t limit their audience. For example, one of BBC One’s ident is dogs going round in circles or one that people are kicking balls in a circle. Both of these idents are very different, one is about animals and the other is based on sports, this give people who love animals pleasure and also people who are interested in sports. http://www.theidentgallery.com/player.php?id=BBC1HD-2010-ID-FOOTBALLERS-1 Identifying: BBC One uses the letter ‘O’ in all of their station identication clip for many reasons. Firstly, the letter ‘O’ obviously represents the ‘O’ in ONE. This makes it easier for viewers to recognise their station. Secondly, the ‘O’ could also represent unity or a sense of community; like we’re all in this together, this would make the viewers feel at home or at ease. Moreover, BBC One’s main colour is ‘red’, they continuously use the colour red so that when people see the colour they can recognise it as being a BBC One channel or programme. Also, because BBC One is a British channel and they view British programme, so the red signifies that.

They are known as a channel that doesn’t spend a big amount of money on the quality of the channel and programme so their idents are usually very simple and cheap. http://www.theidentgallery.com/player.php?id=COMCEN-2012-ID-ANAGRAMS-1 Identification: Comedy Central’s idents there is often a small RED C inside a big RED C representing the channel name, ‘Comedy Central’.
