Basic factsabout MPS • The Metropolitan Police Servicewasfounded in 1829 by Sir RobergPeel • It´s a Police forceresponsibleforlawenforcement in GreaterLondon • ItsecuresprotectionoftheBritishRoyalfamily • Commissioner Police oftheMetropolis – leader oftheforce • Today, itemploys more than 31 000 officers • Supported by 2500 volunteer police cadets • Coversan area of 620 square milesand a populationof 7.2 million

Branchesofthe MPS • The Metropolitan Police Service is made up of many different departments • Each department has a different focus, but they all work together in order to makeLondon the safest major city in the world • Forexample : • local people working with local police to identify and tackle issues of concern in their neighbourhood • Safer Neighbourhoods teams usually consist of one sergeant, two constables and three police community support officers

  4. Safer transport command • There are 32 Safer Transport Teams dedicated to policing each of London's boroughs • Theyprovide a highly visible policing presence tackling crime on the transport network • Theteamsalso patrol on London's roads to help motoristsandcyclists in the case ofproblems

Childprotection • There are 18 Child Abuse Investigation Teams covering all 32 London boroughs • The teams investigate allegations of abuse against children, under 18 years of age • They also investigate historical allegations where the offence took place when the person was under 18 but is now an adult

Leadership - MPS Management • Commissioner • Bernard Hogan-Howe • Born in Sheffield • Mr Hogan-Howe has vast experience in crime investigation and strategic leadership of major public events, public disorder and organised crime, particularly involving the use of firearms.. • DeputyCommissioner • CraigMackey • On 23rd January 2012 Craig Mackey became the Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service.

  7. CrimeAcademy • The Crime Academy was established by the Metropolitan Police Service • providetrainingfor Metropolitan Police personnel • establishments for detectives, crime analysts and those in investigative roles

  8. Women police • Margaret DamerDawson –wanted a uniformed organisation of women to discourage young women from entering prostitution • Nina Boyle - wished to take advantage of the war situation to put women temporarily in men's places • TheyfoundedtheWomen Police Service in 1914
