  1. Teachers & Technology Update 2012

  2. TEA Video • www.txssc.txstate.edu/K12/downloads-videos • After this video all staff, secretaries, and aides are dismissed • All faculty: I get to torture you for a few more minutes!

  3. THEME: No Excuses! from the movie "October Skies". • If you don't know something about technology, look it up! Check out QuickStarts! YouTube it! Google it! Join a PLC! Ask a Peer. Ask a Student. Subscribe to an online journal: Edutopia. Access online training: Atomic Learning • Become a self-motivated learner as a model for your students. • Avoid the emerging global collaboration gap! • Prioritize your time to work smarter (Edmodo, TigerTube, Epsilen) not harder.

  4. GOAL: Return to your First Love • Revelation 2:4Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. • First love as a Christian is to remember who you are and who serve • First love as a Teacher is to remember who you are and who you serve. LOVE TEACHING STUDENTS! Stop teaching air! • Look to their best interests. SERVE THEM. • “Schools were NOT built forTeachers! “

  5. MOVE FROM BORING TO SCORING! • The Dept of Ed has completed a mega study that show that hybrid courses create the best learning environment for student success. • Hybrid courses have these features: • Online content, media, videos, simulations, graphics, audio lectures, etc. that assist students in learning short concepts 24/7 • Digital content delivered over the Web that frees up the teacher to interact and collaborate more with students • Frees the teacher from tedious re-teach events

  6. MOVE FROM BORING TO ENGAGED! • A natural progression from a hybrid (blended) course is the “Flipped Classroom”. • Once a teacher has content online, the next year, that teacher can require the content to be viewed before class leaving time in the classroom for: • Projects, discussions, collaboration, labs, fun interactions, exploring, creating, extending…all the things we have said we don’t have time to do during a class period. • http://youtu.be/2H4RkudFzlc

  7. Helping you Flip your Classroom • What do you need to Flip a classroom or build a more hybrid learning environment? • Technology tools? • Software? • Interactive Websites? • Professional Development? • Parent Involvement?

  8. Remember – You Don’t have the Create All the Content Videos • Students can create it • United Streaming, iTunes U, TED • KhanAcademy • YouTube, TeacherTube, SchoolTube, YouTube EDU • Gizm0s, Study Island, Atomic Learning • Others (www.refsee.com) • http://www.refseek.com/directory/educational_videos.html

  9. TEAM TEACHING w/ YOURSELF • Short Content Videos produced by teacher can be used inside or outside of the classroom. • Top 1% of Class - Get Content if Heard 1 time • Top 10% - Need to hear it 5-10 times • 75% of Class – Need to hear it more than 10 times • Special Needs Students must hear it 1500 times… • ARE YOU GOING TO RETEACH that many TIMES? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNxaSct3UHs

  10. 1:1 Initiative • Every teacher and staff member needs to cooperate in order for students to improve. • Parents want you to be in contact with YOU: Letter home to parents First Week - Expectations (Blog, Edmodo, email, etc.) • Students leaving computers in your classroom…is OK! Don’t send them down to us, if the student notifies you. You cannot charge them a $1 for leaving computers in your classroom. • Coaches must allow students to leave computers in coaching office before games and open the office after games!

  11. 1:1 Initiative • Students DO NOT have to lug a computer home if they have connectivity and access at home. • Students will pay $35 for a loaned laptop & $50 per damage event. • All OdysseyWare students WILL sign an statement of accountability for computers they use at school • All classrooms will have additional computers for students who need them at school but have access at home. • All teachers will provide digital content for extending the educational environment 24/7

  12. Learning environment: Look at your classroom, your supply list, your expectations for classroom assignments: • Are they 19th Century or 21st Century Skill sets that you are promoting? • Are you demonstrating and modeling acquisition of new skills to your students on a regular basis. Are YOU excited about learning new things? Or are your old teaching habits getting in the way? • Can you relate your content to the real-world?

  13. BYOT • Are you interested in bringing your own Technology to School this year? • Pros & Cons: • Faculty & Seniors may use their own technology for educational purposes only while in the district • Device MUST come to Tech Dept, sign contract, & get a sticker!!! • No soap operas, Youtube entertainment, streaming video or radio!!! • Contracts & Guidelines available via email • joy@arpisd.org

  14. Bandwidth Issues Imagine your garden facet supplying 1000 hoses…how much water would come out of each hose?

  15. Bandwidth Issues • Arp ISD is blessed to have large bandwidth available to its users. HOWEVER, this bandwidth can be quickly eaten up by those who abuse the system. • Please DO NOT use our bandwidth during school hours for: • Streaming music, radio, TV, etc. • Surfing for pleasure, shopping online, etc. • Do NOT bypass filter to go to Facebook for ANY reason • Do NOT bypass filter for merely personal reasons (watch the funniest YouTube Video) • Remember! I SEE what you DO!

  18. Current Technology Issues • Getting students off their boohonkuses! Large muscle movement places information in long-term memory. Get students up using Dance Mat, Onfinity Wands, Smartboards, eBeams, Mimios! • Teachers sitting behind desks: Get UP! Monitor, walk around, talk to students eyeball to eyeball. • To Help you Do this– offering iPad2 as a wireless tablet to run your teacher machine from anywhere in the room or in the district. • iPad Training will involve Atomic Learning Modules & Face-to-Face Workshops & Technology Integration Reporting: • http://www.arpisd.org/default/Integration_Form.htm

  19. Current Technology Issues • Digital Content, Assignments, and Productivity: Stop PRINTING! Grade in Edmodo, SWL, Dropbox, Epsilen, Google Docs: 19th Century teaching strategies are not engaging 21st Century students & do not follow TEA’s directives for 21st Century Skills. • All textbooks and supplements will be digital. You need to figure out what skills you lack to provide a digital environment and take advantage of all training offered by the district (Face-to-face, online, and peer mentoring) • Peer Mentors will be selected this year and a small stipend will be paid for your time.

  20. Procedures 2012-13 • Do NOT send in a maintenance request for the first 2 weeks of school unless it is your teacher machine. We will be coming by each of your classrooms….. • We will be getting out student devices first 3 weeks of school • Teachers will be able to check out laptop, or netbook and eventually an iPAD (when training is complete) • All new teachers or teachers moving rooms will be profiled on their machines starting with the HS before school starts.
