  1. New WAFC Gridded Products =New Visualisation Opportunities JozefMatula

  2. IBL’s cooperation with WAFC trials • We committed to: • Evaluation of UK Met Office experimental fields. • SADIS GRIB2 dissemination trial. • “Long Haul” charts. • Monitoring of SADIS reception quality. • This presentation: • Experiments with visualisation of the WAFC experimental fields. • Some experience and feedback gained.

  3. NEW VISUALISATION OPPORTUNITIES

  4. Long Haul Chart Products Produced byIBL Visual Weather and IBL Aero Weather

  5. New Gridded Products Visualisation Single parameter visualisations don’t provide any real added value however they are easily interpretable. Produced byIBL Visual Weather and IBL Aero Weather

  6. New Parameters Visualisation Challenge Proposed gridded information cannot be resonably presented in geospatial context. Taking also vertical extents into account, there will „too much“ information available in any layered view.

  7. Opposite Minimalistic Approach Applying a business logic in the workstation may create added value product which can be more easily interpreted. However this naturally hides some details but can copes better vertical extent (as the present SIGWX charts).

  8. Cross-section Visualisation (1) Thisprovides easy to interpret “picture”but hidesthe surrounding information. Produced byIBL Visual Weather and IBL Aero Weather

  9. Cross-section Visualisation (2) You can’t fax this without losing the quality! Produced byIBL Visual Weather and IBL Aero Weather

  10. CONCLUSIONS & FEEDBACK

  11. SIGWX BUFR vs. New gridded products (1) • Technical experience: • Both are WMO proprietary formats. • SIGWX is presently created from higher resolution NWP grid than whatever is/will be in WAFC distribution. • New gridded products will require more business logic to be implemented on the workstation. • SIGWX production automation could allow coexistence of feature objects (BUFR/XML/GML?) • Missing values are encoded with special values such as 0m CB base height. • 3h forecast step will allow better interpolation.

  12. SIGWX BUFR vs. New gridded products(2) • User experience: • “Too much” information and also... • ...SIGWX captured the vertical extent • Missing “key” how to use and interpret the data. Especially to avoid ambiguous or misleading interpretations. • Use of cross-section products increases demand for more precise specification of flight route what is not always possible. • Availability of wider forecasts range and finer step may allow more accurate and wider end-user products than fixed +24h SIGWX.

  13. Synergy of features vs. grids Feature objects cannot be simply interpolated in time – this would require change in their data model.
