  1. WELCOME to aPRESENTATIONon“GLOBAL WARMING” G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  2. Some Inconvenient Truths… Mumbai’s Nariman Point will be submerged by Year 2020 40% of Himalayan glaciers would vanish by Year 2035 50 million people in coastal belt will be displaced by year 2100

  3. Some Inconvenient Truths… There is not enough time left , just 8 years to save the planet… -Times of India, 8th May, 2007 These are not prophesies by traditional monks or saints but by IPCC ( Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)-a UN body represented by 105 countries comprising of 30 of the world’s top scientists .

  4. What isGlobal warming ? G L O B A L W A R M I N G • Global warming -- a gradual increase in planet-wide temperatures • Earth has been hottest in at least 400 years, and possibly even the la`st 2,000 years. • Studies indicate that the average global surface temperature has increased by approximately 0.5-1.0°F (0.3-0.6°C) over the last century. • This warming is largely attributed to the increase of greenhouse gases in the Earth's upper atmosphere

  5. Climate change may lead to global catastrophe costing millions of lives and is a far great threat than terrorism… - Pentagon

  6. Earth’s temperature rise G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  7. IPCC Report states .. G L O B A L W A R M I N G • Global warming is now “unequivocal” and that human activity “very likely” has been the primary cause of rising temperatures worldwide since 1950. • The report summary also says that global warming is likely to continue for centuries, and that it is already too late to stop some of the serious consequences it will bring—even if mankind could somehow hold the line on greenhouse gas emissions worldwide starting today

  8. G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  9. GREEN HOUSE GASSES G L O B A L W A R M I N G The gas traps heat more effectively than all other gasses are known as Green house gasses, occur naturally in the environment and also result from human activities. These gasses are • Water vapor • Carbon dioxide • Methane • Nitrous oxide

  10. Water VapourMost abundant greenhouse gas which reaches the atmosphere through evaporation from ocean, lakes & rivers . G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  11. Carbon dioxide G L O B A L W A R M I N G Next most abundant greenhouse gas that flows into atmosphere from many processes such as • By burning of fossil fuels, solid wastes & wood products, to drive vehicles, generate electricity, deforestation (huge cutting of trees • Volcanic eruptions • The respiration of human being which inhales oxygen & exhales CO2

  12. In the year 1750 about 281 molecules of CO2 per million molecule of air (ppm). Today it is about 368 ppm which reflects a increase of 31% in atmospheric CO2 concentration.if current predictions prove accurate, by the year 2100 , CO2 will reach concentrations of more than 970 ppm (this figure would be triple the levels prior to the industrial revolution). CO2 Emissions to atmosphere G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  13. Nitrous oxideA powerful insulating gas released primarily by burning fossil fuels .Nitrous oxide traps about 300 times more heat than does the same amount of CO2. The concentration of of nitrous oxide in the atmosphere has increased 17% over pre-industrial levels. G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  14. Methane G L O B A L W A R M I N G An effective insulator trapping over 20 times more heat than does the same amount of CO2 . Since the beginning of the industrial revolution , the amount of methane in the atmosphere has more than doubled. The digestive processes of ruminant animals (e.g. cattle, sheep, goats, deer), venting of natural gas and waste decomposition in landfills are some of the major sources of CH4 emissions.

  15. IMPACT OF GLOBAL WARMING G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  16. CLIMATE • As per scientists’ prediction the warmed world will be more humid & hot which will result in more water evaporation from earth • Humid weather will enhance rainfall but with change pattern & high intensity • Storm will be more strong & frequent • Weather pattern are suspected to be less predictable and more extreme G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  17. 2004 1980 2002 2003 Melting Ice in the Arctic G L O B A L W A R M I N G 1980 2002 2003 2004

  18. SEA LEVEL G L O B A L W A R M I N G • Sea level world wide rose 10-20 cm in 20th century • In 21st century IPCC predicts a rise of 9 to 88 cm . • It will submerge 6% of Netherlands, 17.5% of Bangladesh and many Island will disappear.

  19. AGRICULTURE • Increase in temperature may cause a pole-ward Shift of agricultural zones and shift in growing seasons. • Equatorial zones, where agriculture is generally unproductive now, will deteriorate further. • In many areas currently fertile, like parts of south America, New Zealand, and Southern Africa, condition are Predicted to become more arid and crop yields to become more marginal. G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  20. ANIMAL • Animal and plants will find it difficult to escape from or adjust to effect of warming because of less availability of space already occupied by human populace. G L O B A L W A R M I N G • Approximately 20-30% of plant and animal Species assessed so far are likely to be at greater risk of extinction if increases in global Average temperature exceed 1.5 to 2.5 Celsius.

  21. HUMAN HEALTH G L O B A L W A R M I N G • As per IPCC more people will get sick or die from heat stress due to warmer nights • Today 45% of world population is affected by mosquito carrying parasites. The percentage may increase to 60 if temperature rise rate remains same till 2030. Other diseases e.g. dengue fever, yellow fever and encephalitis will increase rapidly • Allergies & respiratory disease grow as warmer air grows as it will be more charged with pollutant

  22. EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING ON INDIAN CONTEXT G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  23. 30% DROP IN PER CAPITA WATER AVAILABILITY BY 2030 FOR INDIANS AS GREAT DRYS BECOME FREQUENT G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  24. COASTAL CATASTROPHE :- SEA LEVEL WILL RISE 40 CM HIGHER BY 2100 AND 50 MILLION PEOPLE IN COASTAL INDIA WOULD BE DISPLACED BY FLOODING G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  25. Wheat production will fall by 17% in India if the temperature rise by even half-a degree centigrade G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  26. THE HIMALAYAN GLACIERS MAY TOTALLY DISAPPEAR CAUSING CATASTROPHIC DISRUPTION G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  27. THE GLACIER MELTDOWN WILL FIRST RESULT IN RIVERS BEING FLOODED AND THEN DRYING UP. THE GANGA DELTA WOULD TURN INFERTILE G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  28. IF CURRENT WARMING RATE PERSIST, GLACIERS ON THE TIBET PLATEAU WILL SHRINK RAPIDLY FROM 5 LAKH SQ KM TO 1 LAKH SQ KM BY 2030 G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  29. WARMER OCEAN TEMPERATURE WOULD LEAD TO BLEACHING AND DESTROY VAST TRACTS OF INDIAN CORAL REEFS • OCEAN ACIDIFICATION WOULD LEAD TO SHELL DISSOLUTION, SEVERELY IMPACTING MARINE LIFE AND FISHERIES G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  30. G L O B A L W A R M I N G 25% AMOUNT OF FLORA & FAUNA IN INDIA WOULD EXTINCT BY THE YEAR OF 2030.

  31. RemedyWhat can I doas an individual? G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  32. Reuse & Recycle • whenever you can, recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminum cans. • By recycling half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. G L O B A L W A R M I N G

  33. Use Less Heat and Air Conditioning G L O B A L W A R M I N G • Setting your thermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and higher in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year.

  34. Change a Light Bulb G L O B A L W A R M I N G • CFLs last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, use two-thirds less energy, and give off 70 percent less heat. • If every family in India replaces one regular light bulb with a CFL, it would eliminate 900 billion pounds of greenhouse gases, the same as taking 27.5 million cars off the road.

  35. Drive Less and Drive Smart G L O B A L W A R M I N G • Less driving means fewer emissions. • When you do drive, make sure your car is running efficiently • Every gallon of gas you save not only helps your budget, it also keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the environment .

  36. Buy Energy-Efficient Products G L O B A L W A R M I N G • Home appliances now come in a range of energy-efficient products • Avoid products that come with excess packaging, especially molded plastic and other packaging that can't be recycled. If you reduce your household garbage by 10 percent, you can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.

  37. Plant a Tree G L O B A L W A R M I N G If you have the means to plant a tree, start digging.. They are there to fully counter the increases in carbon dioxide caused by automobile traffic, manufacturing and other human activities. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

  38. Use the "Off" Switch G L O B A L W A R M I N G Save electricity and reduce global warming by turning off lights when you leave a room, and using only as much light as you need. And remember to turn off your television, video player, stereo and computer when you're not using them.

  39. Switch to Vegetarian Diet G L O B A L W A R M I N G • 1 pound of beef from cattle raised on feed lots represents the loss of 35 pounds of topsoil. • It takes 16 pounds of grain and soybeans to produce 1 pound of feedlot beef. • About 20 vegetarian can be fed on the land that it takes to feed 1 meat eater.

  40. As an organisation G L O B A L W A R M I N G Change technology: improve efficiency use green energy Utilize renewable energy

  41. Live More Sustainably G L O B A L W A R M I N G In a fragile Biosphere the ultimate fate of humanity may depend on whether we can cultivate a deeper sense of self-restraint,founded on a widespread ethic of limiting consumption and finding non-material enrichment. - Alan Durning World Watch Institute

  42. G L O B A L W A R M I N G Nature has given enough for every body's need but not for everybody’s greed. -M. Gandhi

  43. Missing Dimension

  44. G L O B A L W A R M I N G “We must make the rescue of the environment the central organizing principle for civilization.” -Al Gore

  45. The difference between the cherished ideal and the cruel reality finds its roots in a poverty of values and spirituality. That poverty, hunger and other deprivations persist in an age of global plenty is not an issue of logistics, technology or financing so much as a question of values and morality.- Dadi Janki

  46. Brahmakumaris’ Opinion at Rio The fact that the environment is as polluted and abused as it is today is because we have forgotten that we are as intimately connected to nature as is any baby to her mother. Arrogantly treating her as an object for reckless exploitation in the name of our perceived, but often only imaginary needs, we have fouled and blocked our own life-giving umbilical cord .

  47. Brahmakumaris’ Opinion at Johannesburg during UN meet We will not be able to get the outer world in order until we have first learned to get our inner world in order and transcend short-term selfishness, consumerism, disregard for others and corruption of values .

  48. Root Cause- Mental Pollution Wars are not fought on battle fields but are first fought in minds.

  49. THINK CLEAN, • THINK GREEN! • Outer nature is a reflection of • Inner nature • Inner Harmony is essential for • outer Harmony • Root of the crisis lies in False • identity of Self G L O B A L W A R M I N G
