  2. Introduction • Who was John the Baptist? • “More than a prophet” because John announced the Messiah

  3. Understanding the narrative • 7 As these men were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?(Matt. 11:7 NAU) • John was agitated because people were not repenting

  4. Understanding the narrative • 8 "But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Those who wear soft clothing are in kings' palace (Matt. 11:8 NAU) • Soft clothing was for the wealthy. Judeans had wool from sheep.

  5. Understanding the narrative • 10 "This is the one about whom it is written, 'BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.' (Matt. 11:10 NAU) • Elijah did not return. John was doing what Elijah did – mimicking Elijah

  6. Understanding the narrative • 11 "Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. (Matt. 11:11 NAU) • Semitic idiom meaning “human being.” Humans make mistakes.

  7. Understanding the narrative • 12 "From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force. (Matt. 11:12 NAU) • Violence was a part of life; corruption, oppression, leaders wanted power and no concern for the spiritual wellbeing of the people

  8. Understanding the narrative • 17 and say, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.' (Matt. 11:17 NAU) • Children in the marketplace. Jesus said John and He called people to God but few came

  9. Understanding the narrative • 18 "For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon!’ • Eating and drinking – “having three square meals a day”

  11. Understanding the narrative • 19 "The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds." (Matt. 11:19 NAU) • Wisdom is proven right by its results

  12. For us Today • First impressions • Facilitator example • People made a first impression decision about John and Jesus said they were wrong • Do we do this today?
