  3. Hillel vs. Shammai • The debate over Deut. 24:1-4 (insert Scripture into slide) • Shammai – strict interpretation of the law – only adultery – letter of the law • Hillel – liberal interpretation of the Law – spirit of the law • In Jesus’ day Hillel’s view was the widely accepted view

  4. Talmud & Tosefta • Reasons for divorce • Wife cursing her husband’s parent in his presence • Wife in public with her hair unbound • Wife in public with messy clothing • Wife in a public bath with other men present • Wife exposing her arms in public

  5. Ketubah • Marriage contract • Standard divorce payment – 200 shekels • Dowry has to be returned

Verses 11-1211 But He said to them, "Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given.12 "For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it."

  7. Verse 11 & 12 • Men would desert their wives • Wife could file for divorce so she could marry another man and not be adulteress

  8. For Us Today • Tim Allen – “Santa Claus 3” movie – “The Escape Clause” • Jesus followed the Law but V. 11-12 gives an escape clause • Sometimes the cure to a bad marriage is a divorce • Understanding the original meaning of Scripture leads to this conclusion
