  3. 8B Energy words Match the word to its correct meaning: A is a poisonous by-product of respiration. B take materials to and from respiring cells. C is needed to release energy from glucose in the body. D the process that releases energy from food. E is made when energy is released from food. F is needed to do anything. 4. 8B Who needs energy anyway? We all need energy to do anything. We also need energy to make things like new body cells, or hair. What do you use most of your energy to do?

  5. 8C Who needs the most energy? Sort these 25-year-old women into an order based on the amount of energy they need every day. Make a list starting with the one needing the most energy. Office worker Nurse Athlete Pregnant woman Breastfeeding mother

  6. 8B How did you do?

  7. 8B Respiration – the truth, and quite few lies True or false? 1.Respiration means breathing. 2.Respiration occurs in all body cells. 3.Respiration gives out oxygen. 4.Carbon dioxide is used up by respiration. 5.Respiration is a chemical process that releases energy. 6. Plants do not respire. FALSE TRUE FALSE FALSE TRUE FALSE

  8. 8B Respiration – the truth, and quite few lies True or false? 1.Respiration releases energy from glucose. 2.Oxygen is needed for respiration in humans. 3.We die without oxygen because we cannot respire. 4.Respiration is a bit like burning. 5.People do not respire while they are asleep. 6. The more energy we need, the less we respire. TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE FALSE FALSE

  9. 8B Respiration and combustion Respiration and combustion - same thing? Or not? Are these statements... …only true about respiration? (R) …only true about combustion? (C) …true about respiration and combustion (R & C) Needs a high temperature (C) Gives out light (C) Happens at room temperature (R) Gives out heat (R & C) Needs enzymes to work properly (R) Uses oxygen (R & C) Gives out carbon dioxide (R & C)

  10. 8B Blood and guts! Blood and guts!

  11. 8B Blood cells Red blood cells carry oxygen. They are packed full of a chemical called haemoglobin. There’s no nucleus! White blood cells fight infection. There are a few different types of white blood cells. Platelets - they help the blood to clot. Plasma - the yellowish liquid that all of the cells float around in. It contains lots of dissolved substances to keep cells healthy.

  12. 8B Getting it around the body

  13. 8B Oxygen and the lungs Oxygen and the lungs

  14. 8b So what are the lungs for? The lungs have two jobs: 1 to collect oxygen from the air 2 to deliver carbon dioxide to the air This means that they need 1 a large surface area for this swapping of gases to take place 2 ways to prevent the surfaces being clogged up with dust from the air 3 a good blood supply and circulatory system to move things around the body. How many times do you breathe in a minute?

  15. 8B Respiration is the same as breathing? No? Breathing is the movementof air in and out of the lungs. You can see people breathing and it’s one of the first things a doctor looks for to see if someone is alive. Respiration is a chemical reaction going on inside all living cells. It releases energy from glucose to keep the body alive.

  16. 8B Breathing system

  17. 8B Matching Match the two halves of these sentences: 1 We breathe in air containing... 2 Air gets to the air sacs through... 3Oxygen passes from the air sacs to... 4 Oxygenated blood leaves the lungs through... 5 Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs through... 6 The air we breathe out has... F …lots of oxygen but very littlecarbon dioxide C …the wind pipe and bronchi B …the blood E …the pulmonary vein D …the pulmonary artery A …less oxygen and more carbon dioxide A …less oxygen and more carbon dioxide B …the blood C …the wind pipe and bronchi D …the pulmonary artery E …the pulmonary vein F …lots of oxygen but very little carbon dioxide

  18. 8B Respiration check 1.Animals respire because… a)they need energy b) they live on land c)to cool down. 2.Plants respire… a)only at night b) only during the day c)all the time.

  19. 8B Respiration check 3.Which of these is true about combustion but NOT about respiration? a)It gives out energy. b) It gives out light c)It gives out heat. 4.We take in oxygen through… a)our skin b) our gut c)our lungs.

  20. 8B Respiration check 5.Carbon dioxide is made… a)in all body cells b) only in the lungs c)everywhere except the brain. 6.Red blood cells are red… a)because they contain haemoglobin b) because they contain glucose c)to show up when we cut ourselves.

  21. 8B Respiration check 7.Arteries take blood… a)from the heart to the cells b) from the cells to the heart c)from the lungs to the heart. 8.The lungs have a good blood supply to… a) let oxygen and carbon dioxide move in and out quickly b) keep them warm c)store blood until it is needed by other parts of the body.

  22. 8B Respiration everywhere Complete the table below. Gaseous exchange means taking in one gas and giving out another gas. no yes yes no yes yes no yes yes Why does it always say ‘yes’ in the respiration column?
