  3. What is a musical interval? • The word interval means “space between” • A musical interval is the distance separating any two tones, specifying how much higher or lower the two pitches are relative to one another (Herder, 2000)

  4. How to measure an interval • The standard unit to measure the distance between two pitches is the half-step • On the keyboard • A half-step is the distance between any key and its closest neighboring key • This can be a black or a white key

  5. Why recognize intervals? • Recognizing intervals on printed music • Necessary for sight singing • Recognizing intervals by ear • Necessary for playing by ear

  6. Simple Intervals • Prime or Unison • This is the same note played twice • It does not go up or down

  7. Major 3rd • Sounds like the first two notes of • Michael Row the Boat ashore

  8. Perfect 5th • Sounds like beginning of • Twinkle twinkle little star
