  1. “I Will Build My Church” Part 2 – 1st Key, Expositional Preaching 2 Timothy 3:16-4:5

  2. “According to Christ, what should I be looking for in a church?”

  3. Christopher Ash “All our church activities, relationships, and meetings are governed, directed, led and controlled by scripture. That is our aim.” “Consecutive expository preaching ministry helps us move in the right direction for that aim.”

  4. Mark Dever “Expositional preaching takes a particular passage of Scripture, explains that passage, and then applies the meaning of the passage to the life of the congregation. A commitment to expositional preaching is a commitment to hear God’s Word.”

  5. First Priority!

  6. 2 Timothy 3:16-4:5 G – God has spoken and still speaks through His Word! It is God-breathed. A – The Authority of His Word! Paul tells Timothy to Preach the Word, nothing more, nothing less, preach the authoritative Word of God. P – Popular Preaching. Paul warns Timothy that people will not want to hear sound Biblical preaching, but rather what’s popular. S – Stay the Course. Paul tells Timothy to fulfill his ministry.

  7. Martin Luther “When the Scripture speaks, God speaks!”

  8. 2 Timothy 3:16-17G – God Speaks 16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  9. Article 1 – The Holy Scriptures “The Holy Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, are the inspired, infallible Word of God, a divine revelation, the original writings of which were verbally inspired by the Holy Spirit. They are the supreme and final authority of faith and conduct.”

  10. Hebrews 4:12 “For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

  11. Al Mohler “In far too many churches, the Bible is nearly silent. The public reading of Scripture has been dropped from many services, and the sermon has been sidelined, reduced to a brief devotional appended to the music.”

  12. John 17:17 “Father sanctify them by your word, your word is truth.”

  13. 1 Peter 4:11 “If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God.”

  14. 2 Timothy 4:1-2A – Authority of the Word 1In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

  15. Titus 2:7-8 “In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned.”

  16. 1st Timothy “Devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Because by so doing, you will save both yourself and your hearers.”

  17. 2 Timothy 2:15 “You must study and show yourself approved, becoming a worker who has no need to be ashamed, because you are able to rightly handle the word of truth.”

  18. Read Explain Repeat

  19. 2 Timothy 4:3-4P – Popular Preaching 3For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

  20. 2 Timothy 2:24-25 “The Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth.”

  21. 2 Timothy 4:5S– Stay the course 5But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
