  13. The Incas downfall • Read “Spanish Rule” on page 261. • Shortly after Columbus and Hernan Cortes, Francisco Pizarro from Spain arrived in the Andes. • Reflect back to the Aztec civilization. • Flip back to page 174

  14. Spanish Rule • Pizarro conquered the Incas and Spain ruled most of the western South America for about 300 years.

  15. Meanwhile….. • On the other side of South America, the Portuguese were claiming lands in the area of Brazil. • Spain and Portugal began disputing over land in South America.

  16. Spain vs. Portugal (**Not in textbook) • The Treaty of Tordesillas solved the dispute. • In the Treaty, Spain claimed lands west of the line and Portugal claimed lands east of the line.
