  7. MASTERING THE LIBRARY

  8. Finding a book is easy is you remember a few things • There are 4 main parts of the library Fiction Non-Fiction Reference Biography

  9. FICTION • A fiction book is one that is not true. An author makes up the story and the characters.

  10. NON FICTION • A non fiction book is true. It has factual information about a subject or an event.

  11. BIOGRAPHY • A biography is the true story of a person’s life.

  12. REFERENCE • A reference book is true and contains facts, just like non fiction. But these are a special section of books that cannot be checked out.

  13. Finding a book is easy if you remember a few things Every book has a call number that can be found on the spine of the book

  14. The call number is like an address telling where the book “lives.” Look for the identifying prefix REF = Reference FIC = Fiction B/BIO = Biography ### = Non Fiction Look around the library and see if you can locate all four of these areas.

  15. A call numbermight look like this: REF 973 OXF 159 MCC B JOH FIC TRA OR THIS OR THIS OR THIS

  16. Once you know what section you need, you can use the rest of the call number to figure out exactly where the book you want is located.

  17. Fiction is organized alphabetically We use the author’s last name So a book written by Sarah Dessen would be found under: FIC DES FIC tells you what section to look in DES tells you where in the alphabet the book can be found

  18. Biography is also organized alphabetically But we use the last name of the subject of the book. BIO CHAN So a biography on Jackie Chan would be found under “C.” A biography on Allen Iverson would be found under “I.” BIO IVERSON

  19. Reference and Non Fiction use numbers and letters The number can range from 0 to 999. The number may also have decimals for greater specificity. Books are placed in order from lowest to highest number.

  20. So . . . In Non Fiction you might see call numbers like this: 346 TRA 346.1 ING 346.15 BOS 346.2 WEA

  21. Reference uses the same type of number but adds the prefix REF REF 346.1 ING REF 346.15 BOS REF346TRA REF 346.2 WEA

  22. REMEMBER!!!! When you look up a book, it is really importantto write downall the numbers and lettersthat make up the call number. Writing down the title is also a good idea.

  23. To recap . . . To find a book, you need to know it’s call number (located on the spine). The call number will tell you what section of the library to look in. The call number will also allow you to pinpoint the book’s location. Biographies and Fiction will be organized alphabetically. Non Fiction and Reference use numbers.

  24. How to check out a book • You will need your student I.D. card to check out materials from the library • All books and Playaways are checked out for two weeks • Each can be renewed twice • We do not charge daily fines for overdue materials. However, any book that is overdue more than four weeks will be marked lost and the student charged the full price of the book.
