  1. Use your periodic table to find • 3 elements beginning with H • The elements which have the symbols • Au, Pb, Be, O, Na, Li, Ca • 2 elements which bond together to make something you put on your food Chemical Reactions revision LO: to revise elements and chemical reactions Elements song with lyrics

  2. By the end of this lesson you should be able to answer these questions By the end of this lesson, you should be able to answer. Name 3 elements and 3 compounds Write down 3 signs that tell you a chemical reaction has occurred Name 3 acids How do we test for hydrogen gas? How do we test for carbon dioxide gas? What is the formula for Magnesium carbonate?

  3. Atoms, elements, molecules and compounds All matter is made from atoms (particles) All atoms are composed of protons, neutrons and electrons Different atoms have different number of protons Molecules are a group of 2 or more atoms bonded together. Compound is 2 or more different atoms bonded together

  4. Exam question

  5. Reaction of Magnesium and hydrochloric acid What is your prediction?

  6. METHOD: Reacting metals with acids 1. Wear goggles 2. Pour 1cm of HCl into a boiling tube, 3. Add a few pieces of Magnesium 4. Collect the gas in another boiling tube 5. Light a split and place it inside the test tube above the acid Answer in full sentences in your book 1.How do you know a reaction is occurring? 2. How do you test for hydrogen gas? 3. Write a word equation for this reaction

  7. Acids and metals Remember that acids are corrosive. Many metals react with acids. When this happens the metal fizzes as bubbles are produced. What do the bubbles mean? Hydrogen gas is produced. How do we test for hydrogen? Use a burning splint to make the hydrogen explode. burning splint hydrogen Mg + acid

  8. Reactions of metal with acids equation acid salt metal hydrogen Metal carbonate Carbon dioxide gas salt acid water

  9. Remember The Rules HydrochloricAcid→ Chloride SulphuricAcid→Sulphate NitricAcid→Nitrate

  10. Naming compounds

  11. Exam question

  12. TASK: Revision questions, discuss with your partner and then answer in your book (in full sentences) 1. Use the periodic table to match the symbol/name to the elements Element name Symbol Gold Si Ag lead C 2. Name 3 elements and 3 compounds 3. Write down 3 chemical symbols of 3 elements of your choice? 4. Write down 3 signs that tell you a chemical reaction has occurred? 5. Name 3 acids 6. How do we test for hydrogen gas? 7. How do we test for carbon dioxide gas? 8. What is the formula for Magnesium carbonate?

  13. TASK: Use the periodic table to find the symbols for these elements and answer these question • Example: a Board game: carbon, helium, two sulphurs • C He S S • 1. Relative: sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen • 2. Fuel:carbon, oxygen, aluminium • 3. Group of fish:sulphur, hydrogen, oxygen, aluminium • 4. For the rubbish: boron, iodine, nitrogen • 5. A toy story:Tungsten, oxygen, oxygen, dysprosium • My favourite: Sulphur, hydrogen, rhenium, potassium • A disney character:Argon, iodine, aluminium • Where are you. Sulphur, Silicon, Sulphur Now make up 3 of your own for your partner to try Remember to write the symbols with capitals and small letters in the correct place eg Helium is He

  14. From the video. Meet the elements • Answer these questions How do we make diamond from coal? What is glass made from? What do we use the element Hg for? What 4 elements make up most living things? What are stars mostly made from? What is CaSO4 better known as?
