  15. 16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. 17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18"The Spirit of the Lord is on me,       because he has anointed me       to preach good news to the poor.    He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners       and recovery of sight for the blind,    to release the oppressed, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."[e] 20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, 21and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

  20. Jesus Opposition- Politics, not really religious sects • Herodians-Formed by Herod amongst the Jews who supported foreign rule and didn’t mine paying their dues to the Romans • Pharisees (seperated) (associate)high moral order and felt religious performance key (Super clean and Holy people) Scribes • Sadducees- Priests The Book of the Law only nothing else matters

  21. How He Got his Disciples • Luke  12One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: 14Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

  22. Who were his Disciples • Matthew 9: 35 - 10: 8 • Mark 3: 13 - 19 • Luke 6: 12 - 18 • John 1: 35 - 42Very Similar accounts but used different Names for some

  23. A Brief Introduction to the 12 • Simon Peter - Fisherman, son of John • Andrew - Fisherman, son of John, Peter's brother • James - Fisherman, son of Zebedee, son of Boanerges (thunder) • John - Fisherman, son of Zebedee, Boanerges (thunder), brother of James • Philip - From Bethsaida • Matthew - tax collector, son of Alphaeus • Nathaniel (Bartholomew) - from Cana, a "true Israelite" • Thomas- Didymus • James, son of Alphaeus • Simon, the Zealot - Guerrilla fighter • Judas, son of James • Judas Iscariot - Guerrilla fighter, son of Simon

  24. Application • Every time Jesus did a miracle he would tell them not to tell anyone or just show others what he has done. When he got over crowded he would leave and go somewhere else. The Miracles were great it showed his power, who he was, where his authority came from. BUT • This was not Jesus' purpose his purpose was to come to earth proclaim the gospel, set up his church, and more importantly fulfill the price of Sin • How about us, get caught up with all these great works but are we doing the primary reason why God has put us here which is sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with all we meet. Jesus was more interested in Spreading the message of Repentance and Remission of Sin than performing miracles which were only physical to portray what Jesus is truly all about
