  3. Kingdom Protista... First group of organisms to have a nucleus (eukaryotic). They are not animals, plants, or fungus

  4. Kingdom Protista... Amoeba Most are unicellular Euglena Paramecium

  5. Kingdom Protista... A few are multicellular Kelp Brown Algae

  6. Kingdom Protista... Protists have no specialized systems. They do everything within a single cell. Paramecium eating Red yeast Amoeba eating paramecium

  7. Reproduction of Protists Conjugation- 2 protists Exchange genetic material Cell Division Alternation of generation in green algae- sexual stage and asexual stage

  8. Types of Protists Protists are Grouped by how they get energy. They can be • Heterotrophic • Autotrophic • Symbiotic

  9. Heterotrophic Protists eat other organisms. They are classified by how they move:

  10. Flagellates move with a whip-like tail called a flagella.

  11. Ciliates move with many cilia or hairs

  12. Amoebas change their shape making cytoplasmic projections called Pseudopods. Amoeba – performing phagocytosis (engulfing food)

  14. Passive protists don’t move at all, they depend on air or water to carry them.

  15. A second type of protist are the Symbiotic protists. They form a relationship with another organism.

  16. Some are mutualistic- both organisms are benefited. Coral(an animal) and Zooxanthellae(a protist) help each other to survive

  17. Trichonympha protists live in the intestines of termites, helping them digest wood.

  18. Some protists are parasitic and are responsible for some of the world’s most deadly diseases! Trypanosoma- causes African Sleeping Sickness

  19. Protozoan Diseases Malaria • Severe flu-like symptoms to coma and death, • carried by the mosquito

  22. Autotrophic Protists Unicellular algae and multicellular algae Get their energy by photosynthesis Produce half of the world’s oxygen

  23. Ecological Roles- photosynthetic protists play an important role on earth They are the base of most aquatic food chains

  24. Provide energy for coral Some protists live inside coral and provide food for it’s survival

  25. Giant Kelp Forests

  26. Provide shelter Autotrophic protists help recycle sewage

  27. Algal Bloom- protist grow to enormous numbers and then disrupt the normal ecosystem Red Tide

  28. Human Uses of Algae Food: sushi, ice cream, salad dressing, pudding, candy bars, syrup, eggnog Medications, cosmetics Industrial uses: plastics, waxes, paints, lubricants
