  2. What is a game • Not a Movie • It should be interactive, have control • Not a Toy • Requires Goals • Not a Puzzle • Game can have puzzle in it, but a puzzle is a puzzle • Not a Drawing Program • A game can have drawing elements in it.

  3. What is a computer game? • It is a software program in which one or more players make decisions through the control of game objects and resources, in pursuit of a goal.

  4. Players • Design it for people to interact and play with. • Basics – Not too hard or impossible, learning curve • Challenge – Not too easy, progressively challenging • Target your audience • Kids • Teens • Adults • Experience, Inexperience

  5. Decisions and Control • Decision should effect the game • The more your actions effect the outcome of the game the more satisfying the game can be. • Players should be able to control something. • Balance or control and no control to increase difficulty • Having infinite or unlimited resources to control can be fun at the start…

  6. Balance • Between players • Between player and game play • Difficulty • Between player and game features • Weapons • Power

  7. Goals and Rewards • A game has goals and is winnable! • You can have sub goals • E. solve the puzzle to get the key to open the door. • Losing shouldn’t be the games fault, • careful with luck… • Rewards • Crap ones • Too big • Predictable or random?
