Three types of muscles • Nearly half of your body mass is muscle. • A muscles is made of fibers, or cells, bound together. • Smooth Muscle: found in the walls of your internal organs and blood vessels. • Its most common function is to squeeze in order to move material through the organ it surrounds. • Smooth muscles are considered involuntary muscles, muscles in which contractions aren’t under conscious control. • Cardiac Muscle: involuntary muscle that makes up your heart.

  3. Skeletal Muscle: muscle that is attached to and moves your bones. • The majority of your muscles are skeletal muscles. • It’s a voluntary muscle, which is a muscle that contracts under conscious control.

Skeletal Muscle Contraction • The movement of skeletal muscles work in opposing pairs. • The fibers that make up muscles are made of smaller units called myofibrils. • Myofibrils are made up of thick and thin filaments. • Myosin: protein that makes the thick filaments. • Actin: protein that makes the thin filaments. • Each myofibril can be divided into sections called sarcomeres, the functional units of muscle. • Sliding Filament Theory:states that actin filaments slide toward each other during contraction while myosin filaments don’t move.

  5. Muscle strength and exercise • How can I increase the strength of my muscles? • Muscle strength doesn’t depend on how many fibers your muscle is made of. It depends on the thickness of the fibers and on how many of them contract at one time. • Muscle cells are supplied with ATP from aerobic and anaerobic processes. • When your muscles are at rest, your body uses the aerobic respiration process to produce ATP. • When your exercising, your body uses lactic acid fermentation to produce ATP.

Imagine you’re running and your body can’t sustain aerobic respiration and produce enough ATP. • Your body relies on lactic acid fermentation. • As you catch your breath, more oxygen is supplied to your muscles and lactic acid is broken down. • Regular exercise can result in improved performance of muscles.

  7. A Muscle Locomotion is made possible by the contraction and relaxation of muscles. Muscle Structure A single fiber in a muscle is made of myofibrils. Each myofibril can be broken into sacromeres. Nerve Signal When a skeletal muscle receives a signal from a nerve, calcium releases in the muscle fibers, causing them to contract. Contraction Muscles contract when the actin filaments are pulled to the center of each sacromere. The filaments move back when the muscle relaxes.
