  1. UCLA Support for THEMIS • Ground based Magnetic Observatory Support provided by UCLA • Project Leader Prof. C. T. Russell • Lead Design Engr. David Pierce • EPO Installations Engr. Don Dearborn • Research Assistant Yasong Ge March, 2006

  2. Objectives • Support the THEMIS science and EPO missions by supplying science grade, ground based magnetometers. • Support the THEMIS EPO mission by building, installing and maintaining 10 ground based magnetic observatories in high schools across the US.

  3. Hardware Delivered • GBO Magnetometers • UCLA supplies basic magnetometer, power supply, sensor and GPS receiver. UCB integrates. UCB and Calgary install. • GPS-Only Units. • UCLA supplies GPS data handling unit, power supply and GPS receiver. UCB integrates. UCB and Calgary install. • EPO Magnetometers • UCLA supplies basic magnetometer, power supply, sensor, GPS receiver, PC, UPS, power strip and remote boot device. UCLA integrates and installs.

  4. System Specifications • Fluxgate Magnetometer • ±72KnT dynamic range @ 0.01nT Resolution (~23 bits) • Offset DAC system for 256 possible ranges per axis • 2 Vectors per second data rate • Low Power < 4W • Small Size 22cm x 13cm x 5cm • Ruggedized All Weather Sensor Design • USB interface for data retrieval and firmware upload • Noise spectral density <=50pT/sqrt(Hz) @ 1Hz

  5. System Spec.s (cont.) • GPS Reciever • Antenna and Electronics Integrated into one package • May be located >30M from host (RS422 signals) • NTP compatible (1msec time accuracy) • Observatory Support system • Dell PC provides >3yrs archival, real time display, “real-time” data broadcast over internet, and remote troubleshooting/service over internet. • Belkin 375Watt UPS provides >15 minutes power outage protection with orderly shutdown. • iBoot provides remote (over internet) control of power cycling of PC and magnetometer.

  6. UCLA Ground Based Magnetometer • UCLA Sigma-Delta, Temperature Stabilized, Fluxgate Magnetometer

  7. EPO Observatory • Complete EPO observatory setup w/magnetometer shipping case.

  8. GPS Receiver Installed • GPS antennae installed on roof. Remus, MI

  9. GPS Only Hardware Milestones • Goal – Deliver 10 GPS-Only Units to UCB

  10. EPO Hardware Milestones • Goal - Install 10 sites between spring 04 and fall 05 *11th Site not included in original EPO proposal.

  11. GBO Hardware Milestones • Goal – Deliver 11 GBO Magnetometers to UCB

  12. UCLA Support for THEMIS • UCLA has delivered all but one unit and will meet that delivery date. • UCLA is ready now to provide support to THEMIS campaign.
