  2. Rhythm and blues, which is more famously known as R&B, is a popular African American music that originated from the 1940’s. Some of styles of R&B include soul, funk, hip hop and urban music. R&B in its original form grew out of jazz music. R&B initially appealed to those who were African American audiences and it originally originated from the area. Louis Jordan was one of the first artists to be identified with the genre as he came out with the song “you've gotta have the beat” in 1940 and was considered as highly popular musician with both black and white audiences in the later years of the swing era. Aretha Franklin is another singer songwriter who has made an impact in the genre, who’s also famously known as “the queen of soul”. Franklin's cover of “respect” was a landmark for the feminist movement, and is often considered as one of the best songs of the R&B era, it’s a song that has been repeatedly heard through the years. In the 1970’s, music artists such as Stevie wonder and Michael Jackson were more of the recent popular R&B, pop and soul singers. Michael Jackson was a popular American recording artist in the 1980’s and was referred to as the king of pop. He is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by Guinness World Records as his contribution to music, dance and fashion, along with a much-publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades. Key ArtistsThe Jackson 5 The Jackson 5 were an American popular family group of 5 from Indiana, founded group members Michael, Tito, Jermaine, Jackie and Marlon formed “Jackson 5” in 1964.They played from a range of R&B, Soul, Pop an later disco. During the time they were with Motown records, the Jacksons were one of the biggest pop-music phenomena's of the 1970’s. They were one of the first Black American teen idols to appeal to both whites and black audiences to the successful relation skills of Motown records. Many of their singles reached the “top of the billboard hot 100” such as their first four major singles "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save", and "I'll Be There“. When they changed record labels from Motown to CBS in 1976, The Jackson family were forced to change their name and Jermaine was replaced with younger brother Randy as Jermaine chose to stay with Motown records. After two years under the Philadelphia International Records label, they signed with Epic Records and was restrained of their songwriting, production, and image.

  4. With over 70 tracks, The Jackson 5 have made a big impact in the Genre R&B and have continued till today to prolong their legacy with great pop and soul music recorded by themselves. The Jackson 5 was the inspiration for several generations of boy bands of this century who have also today made an impact in the music industry.

Music artists: Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Al green, Johnny Taylor Reggae: Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. music style that originated following on the development of ska, rock steady and rhythm and blues Music Artists: Bob Marley, Steve Barrow, Lincoln Barrington "Sugar" Minot. Motown: Motown music is a musical genre that blends the sounds of rhythm and blues (R&B)and pop music styles. It is played with a variety of musical instruments, from electric to acoustic. Music artists: The Supremes, the four tops.

Jazz: Jazz is a musical tradition and style of music that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in African American communities Contemporary R&B: Contemporary R&B (also known as simply R&B) is a music genre that combines elements of hip hop, soul, R&B, pop and funk. Music artists: Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Gene rice Funk: Funk is a music genre that originated in the mid-late 1960s when African American musicians blended soul music, soul jazz and R&B into a rhythmic, danceable new form of music. Music artists: James Brown, George Clinton, The fantastic four Hip hop: Hip hop music is a musical genre that developed as part of hip hop culture, and is defined by four key stylistic elements: rapping, DJ, sampling ,and beat boxing Music Artists: MC hammer, Beastie boys

  7. The public perception of R&B Rhythm and blues, popularly known as “R&B” used to be more popular with the African American races in the 1940’s/1950’s as it had originated from the area. However through the decades more and more artists had begun to contribute to the R&B genre was considered as a popular genre with both black and white audiences. R&B has a mainstream appeal to the audiences.

  8. Record labels Def jam: Def Jam Recordings is an American hip-hop record label, owned by Universal Music Group, and operates as a part of The Island Def Jam Music Group. Founded in 1984 by Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin. Many current highly popular artists are signed with def jams record label such as Mariah Carey, Fabulous, Ne-Yo, Rihanna. Also there are many former artists who have signed with def jam who are popular too such as The Beastie boys.

  9. Columbia Records Columbia Records is an American record label, owned by Sony Music Entertainment, and operates as an imprint of the Columbia/Epic Label Group. It was founded in 1888, evolving from an earlier enterprise, the American Graphophone Company. Jive Records Jive Records is a record label based in New York City, owned by Sony Music Entertainment, Jive is primarily known for a string of successes with hip hop artists in the 1980s, and in teen pop and boy bands in the late 1990s.

  10. Competition Vibe magazine: Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. The publication mainly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. Vibe is a highly popular magazine that produces new issues every month for customers to buy. By the context and layout of the magazine, it shows that its target audience is to a younger generation. Vibe magazine is highly popular both on the internet and purchasing one in store. Blues and soul: Blues & Soul is a British music magazine covering urban music.Blues and Soul comes out every two weeks which is sold in the UK and US. It features the latest UK and US blues and soul/ urban music information such as celebrity news, the music charts, single reviews and celebrity interviews.

  11. Source magazine: Source magazine is a Unites States based magazine founded in 1988. It’s a monthly sold magazine featuring hip-hop music, politics, culture and single/album chartings. It features many popular rap artists every issue as for Eminem, beastie boys and more.

  12. Cross media Choice fm is a brand used by the UK's biggest radio company. It’s the number one urban station in UK playing all the latest R&B and hip-hop music featuring best music, news, charts and gossip. MTV is a music digital television channel which originally came out in the UK, showing the top 100 charts or urban, R&B and pop music.

  13. Predictions for the future R&B seems to be a popular music genre that nearly everyone seems to like a bit of. Even though there are now many other genres over shadowing R&B, it still seems that the R&B genre in the media is more heard and seen than the other genres. Many artists today such as Ne-Yo, Rihanna and Jennifer Hudson still seem continue the popularity of R&B today. Even though many peoples taste isn't R&B, there are still many audiences that listen to R&B.
