  2. WARM UP—Vocabulary Review Pick up your vocabulary charts from the basket and use 4 of the vocabulary words in a brief paragraph.

  3. Today’s Learning Goal I will make predictions before reading the text and I will identify and record supporting details while I read by using the graphic organizer provided.

  4. Today’s Learning Goal I will be able to identify main ideas and supporting details in the text to synthesize the information presented by using the graphic organizers provided.

  5. Before Reading • Take a “walk” through the selection. Scan the different text features—the title, pictures, captions, and bold or italicized words. • List three things you’ve found and explain why you think those things will be important to the reading.

  6. Use Graphic Organizer • Intelligence vs. Instinct • Record Evidence/Rules/Supporting Details • Evaluate and draw a conclusion on whether intelligence or instinct has the advantage

  7. Write a Summary of the Essay • Use the graphic organizer provided to identify the main idea of Petrunkevitch’s essay • Identify the primary supporting details he presents (you may refer to either the text or the chart you used to collect evidence) • Use what you collect to summarize “The Spider and the Wasp”

  8. EXIT REFLECTION Based on the facts presented in “The Spider and the Wasp” so far, have your opinions on intelligence vs. instinct changed? Write a brief paragraph explaining why or why not.
