  1. Textiles 3101 Assignment T-shirt Tote bag

  2. Recycle Assignment Overview • We will take 2 classes to work on this • Each student will be given a random t-shirt • Note- If you would like to bring in your own tee, do so • We will take a t-shirt and with limited cutting and sewing, it will be converted into a tote • Totes can be used for anything- gym bag, for books...

  3. How to Make a Tote Bag • Step One- Obtain t-shirt and place flat on your working surface • Make sure seams are aligned with each other Ex. Shoulder seams

  4. 2. Cut sleeves off • Cut sleeves off • If possible, cut outside the seams- leaving the t-shirt`s seams in place will add extra durability *Keep sleeves- You may want to add on a pocket later

  5. 3. Cut out neckline (collar) • Option1- Cut out neckline with square shape. Should go down 4inches • Option 2- Cut out semi circle (Be sure to make it even) • If you have a v-neck, you may need to cut at the bottom of `V` * The further you cut down the longer your straps would be.

  6. 4. Sew bottom • Turn tee inside out • Place a few pins in bottom of tee to secure fabric • It will work best if you sew on existing seams- for durability • Sew along the bottom, creating the tote bag • Create a 1`` seam • Sew 1`` from edge Sew along the bottom

  7. 5. Turn Inside out • Tote bag is complete! • Extras- You may use the sleeves to create a pocket • You may want to add a button closure • Embellishments

  8. 1. Cut off the sleeves, leaving the shoulder seam intact. 2. Cut off the collar, creating a larger opening for the tote. 3. Turn the shirt inside out, pin the bottom closed, and sew shut. Only one straight seam to sew (Dont forget to reverse at beginning and end to hold stitches in place) 4. Tidy it up- cut off threads, be sure handles are even..... And then you are DONE!! 5. Pin your name to the tote bag and submit for grading
