  1. VCC Discipleship Training Discipleship - Part OneMatthew 28:19-20 - The Great Commission"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

  2. VCC Discipleship Training Four Foundational Principles A discipleship plan that will maximize the chances of a new believerreaching maturity has four basic principles. It includes:• Four foundational disciplines• An understanding of similar temptation patterns• A focus on the first three months of a new believer’s walk, and• One-on-one relationships! www.disciplinganother.com

  3. VCC Discipleship Training Four foundational disciplines • Christians who faithfully practice the disciplines of: • --- Prayer • --- Bible study--- Fellowship, and • --- Evangelism/Discipleship • stay faithful to Jesus. Christianity is a relationship with Jesus, and all good relationships have discipline. Without discipline, relationships will not grow and mature. As a Christian, you must love Jesus and grow in this love.

  4. VCC Discipleship Training An Understanding of Similar Temptation Patterns All new Christians have the same temptations! Ecclesiastes 1:9b-10 So there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one might say, "See this, it is new"? Already it has existed for ages which were before us. --- Lust and Desires that are unhealthy --- Old habits, addictions, behaviors that have not been overcome --- Not familiar with the Bible to know what its instructions for Godly living --- Naturally lazy and undisciplined --- A spiritual baby in a new and unfamiliar world

  5. VCC Discipleship Training The First Three Months Most new believers walk away from faithfulness within three months of theirconfession of Christ as Lord and Savior. There have been significant studies indicating that it takes about three months fora person making a commitment to actualize that commitment into daily life. Though thecommitment is made with sincerity, it takes about three months of HARD WORK for thatcommitment to actually become a habit. For new believers who stay faithful for three months, there is a greater likelihoodthat they will reach maturity in Christ. The first three months are critical for newbelievers – make it three months and the Christian life gets easier.

  6. VCC Discipleship Training One on One Relationship The most effective discipleship is a one-on-one relationship. A classroom, evenwith an excellent teacher, isn’t a good method for instructing new believers. We don’traise our children in a classroom, and a classroom doesn’t work well for new believerseither. When a local church begins a 10-week new believers’ class with twenty fiveattendees, by the end of the course only seven or eight will still be attending. Wherehave the others gone? www.disciplinganother.com

  7. VCC Discipleship Training What can you expect? • Prayer. Your discipler will pray for you daily.• An example. Your discipler will be doing what is asked of you.• No gain. Disciplers are not to gain from a discipling relationship –financially, professionally, or emotionally. • No control. Disciplers are not to tell you what decisions to make with yourlife. They will only teach the principles taught in this process and help youapply Biblical wisdom to the decisions that you need to make.• Follow the plan. Your discipler will use only the material outlined in thisprocess. www.disciplinganother.com

  8. VCC Discipleship Training What can you expect? • Proper boundaries. Your discipler has made a commitment to lead youthrough this process in about ten lessons. (Some lessons may take twosessions.) Your discipler does not have an obligation to spend more time withyou than the ten required lessons. You should not look to your discipler as acounselor or therapist but rather as a friend who is walking with you. Yourdiscipler will not be able to help you with severe emotional or financialdifficulty. If you have difficulties outside the scope of this discipleshipmaterial, your discipler will help you find a Christian leader, pastor, orcounselor who can help.• Lift up Jesus. In all things we glorify Jesus. He alone deserves our praise. Come and follow Come and be with me Remain in meJohn 15:7-8

  9. When we consider Prayer - we must look at the following aspects of Prayer: • - Prayer defined • - Purpose of Prayer • - Benefits of Prayer • - Guidelines for Prayer • Prayer defined: • To ask for something earnestly or humbly, talk openly and honestly to God - by Faith - knowing that He is attentive to your prayers. • Deuteronomy 4:7 What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to him? VCC Discipleship Training Four foundational disciplines - PRAYER

  10. Purpose of Prayer Dennis Cox says, "A good prayer life is being aware of God’s presence and being transparent with Him about what I am experiencing." All meaningful relationships require continual, open, honest, and sincere bi-directional communication. The Christian relates to God the Father because Jesus has made it possible. He reconciled us to the Father. We communicate to God the Father because we both want to and need to. VCC Discipleship Training Four foundational disciplines - PRAYER

  11. VCC Discipleship Training Benefits of Prayer - Keeps the lines of communication open between us and God - Provides us a time to express to God exactly what we are feeling or experiencing - Provides us a time to express to God our needs and wants - Provides us a time to express to God the needs and wants of others - Opportunity to use the appropriate Bible verses in our prayer to strengthen our faith, declare the promises of God, and remind ourselves of who we are in Christ Four foundational disciplines - PRAYER

  12. Benefits of Prayer - Helps us to overcome temptation - Brings physical and spiritual healing James 5:14-16 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. - Allows God the Father through the Holy Spirit to speak to us VCC Discipleship Training Four foundational disciplines - PRAYER

  13. Guidelines for Prayer Matthew 6:5-8 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. - Pray to be noticed only by your heavenly Father - make sure your motives are pure - Pray in private as part of your private relationship with God - Pray in public as part of your corporate (Church) relationship with God - Pray as a natural, comfortable, integral part of your everyday life - Pray with few words - many words are not a formula to answered prayers - Pray - even though you know that God already knows VCC Discipleship Training Four foundational disciplines - PRAYER

  14. Bible Study • * Notice - Not just Bible Reading - but Bible Study • To Study implies a much more rigorous approach • To Study implies the use of several Study Tools and Resources • Study requires time and discipline • Time is precious • Discipline not in our nature • Study does not require you to be a scholar - just determined VCC Discipleship Training Four foundational disciplines - BIBLE STUDY

  18. Fellowship VCC Discipleship Training Four foundational disciplines - FELLOWSHIP FellowshipPsalm 133:1 -Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! Hebrews 10:23-25 - Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.Acts 2:42-47 - They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

  19. Fellowship VCC Discipleship Training Four foundational disciplines - EVANGELISM/DISCIPLESHIP Evangelism defined: “the spreading of the Christian gospel by public preaching or personal witness”, “zealous advocacy of a cause” - New Oxford American Dictionary 2nd EditionEvangelism is a natural result of having a genuine salvation & conversion experience through Jesus Christ. When something life-changing happens in the life of any human being - the natural response is to tell someone about it. Something as life-changing and eternally critical MUST be shared with others. That is our “Great Commission.”The Apostle Paul is our examplePhilippians 1:12-18 - Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly. It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

  20. Fellowship VCC Discipleship Training Four foundational disciplines - EVANGELISM/DISCIPLESHIP Discipleship defined: “from Latin discipulus ‘learner,’ from discere ‘learn’, the state of attempting to follow the example of Jesus or another teacher” - New Oxford American Dictionary 2nd EditionDiscipleship means personal, passionate devotion to a Person—our Lord Jesus Christ. There is a vast difference between devotion to a person and devotion to principles or to a cause. Our Lord never proclaimed a cause—He proclaimed personal devotion to Himself. To be a disciple is to be a devoted bondservant motivated by love for the Lord Jesus.Oswald Chamber - My Utmost for His HighestDiscipleship - therefore is the one-on-one, face-to-face interaction between the “Discipler” and a Disciple. This requires a mutual devotion on the part of both - first and foremost to the Lord Jesus Christ; and secondly a devotion to the process of being discipled. Trust is an integral component of the Discipler/Disciple relationship. This trust is mutual and is demonstrated during the discipleship process. The Disciples were devoted to Jesus and therefore what He said to them held value and importance. They were devoted to not just hear what He spoke, but they were devoted to do what He spoke. James 1:22 NIV Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

  21. VCC Discipleship Training All new Christians have the same temptations! Ecclesiastes 1:9b-10 So there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one might say, "See this, it is new"? Already it has existed for ages which were before us. --- Lust and Desires that are unhealthy --- Old habits, addictions, behaviors that have not been overcome --- Not familiar with the Bible to know what its instructions for Godly living --- Naturally lazy and undisciplined --- A spiritual baby in a new and unfamiliar world 1Corinthians 10:13 - No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. An Understanding of Similar Temptation Patterns

  22. All new Christians have the same temptations! We cannot use the excuse for giving into temptations that it has never been this difficult to resist temptation as it is now. The Bible tells us differently. Those who lived at the time of Jesus had just as much temptation at their fingertips. They were able to resist and overcome it and we are able to resist and overcome it - IF WE WANT TO!!! Romans 8:5-8 - Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. VCC Discipleship Training An Understanding of Similar Temptation Patterns

  23. VCC Discipleship Training • Most new believers walk away from faithfulness within three months of their confession of Christ as Lord and Savior. • How do you not become a statistic? • 1) - Don’t try to do it alone! • 2) - Asking for help is not a sign of weakness - it’s a sign of Wisdom • “A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:12 NLT • 3) - Resist the tendency to think that you will be a burden to whoever will be helping • you A focus on the first three months of a new believer’s walk

  24. VCC Discipleship Training A focus on the first three months of a new believer’s walk • Most new believers walk away from faithfulness within three months of their confession of Christ as Lord and Savior. • How do you not become a statistic? • 4) - The person discipling you should be of the same gender whenever possible • 5) - There must be a definite beginning and end to the discipling process • 6) - Jesus invested 3 years in the lives of His Disciples - 1 year is a reasonable target

  25. VCC Discipleship Training One-on-One relationships! • When you disciple one-on-one and the person that you’re discipling doesn’tshow up for a meeting, you will immediately call to find out what happened. • That’s the benefit of one-on-one discipleship – it has relationship and accountability. Discipleship works best in a one-on-one relationship. • If it’s not One-on-One - it’s not TRUE DISCIPLESHIP • www.disciplinganother.com
