  1. Tides

  2. Tides Tides: the periodic rise and fall of the water level in the oceans and other large bodies of water • High tide is when the water level is highest. • Low tide is when the water level is lowest.

  3. What causes tides? • Gravitational pull of the moon and the sun on the earth. • When are the highest high tides and lowest low tides (Greatest tidal range)? • Answer? Full moon or New Moon. • When are the lowest high tides and highest low tides (Lowest tidal range). • Answer: First quarter and third quarter moon phases.

  4. Spring and Neap Tides

  5. Tides • In Chesapeake Bay, we have 2 highs and 2 lows each day. • High and low tides occur about 30-50 minutes later each day due to the moon rising and setting about 30-50 minutes later each day. • There are 6 hours between high and low tide. Due to moon’s orbit around earth. 24 hours/6 = 4 tides a day. • Greatest tidal range is during full and new moon.

  6. Tidal Range • Tidal range affected locally by: • Shape of ocean basin • Size of basin • Depth of basin

  7. High and Low Tide
