INTRODUCTION TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN PUTRA AL-HAJ • The first Prime Minister of Malaysia- • Father of Independence/ Bapa Kemerdekaan • was born on February 8,1903, Alor Setar, Kedah • become the President of UMNO after Datuk Onn Jaafar resigned • led a mission to London in January 1956 to negotiate for independence • Declared the independence of Malaya on 31st August,1957

  4. BIRTH • Born in Istana Pelamin(Istana Tiga Tingkat) • Alor Setar, Kedah • on 8th February 1903 • was the twentieth child and the seventh prince of the late Sultan Abdul Hamid Halimshah and Che Menjalara

  5. FAMILY • His father is the Sultan Abdul Hamid Halimshah the twenty-fourth Sultan of Kedah • His mother Nerang, better known as Che Menjalarawas the daughter of Luang Mira, the leader of the Shan Tribe in Siam • He married with Meriam at 1933, he married with Violet Coulson at 1935. In 1939, Tunku was married with Sharifah Rodziah Syed Alwi Barakbah. • two adopted children, a son, Tunku Ahmad Nerang and a daughter, Tunku Khatijah.

EDUCATION • formal education only started when he was at the age of six • studied in an English- medium Government English School. • At the age of eight, Tunku studied in the Thebsurian School in Bangkok because his brother,Tunku Yusuf was posted to the Siam Armed Forces • At 1915, back to Kedah and continued his studies in Penang Free School • He went to England in 1920 studied in St. Catherine College, Cambridge University because the Scholarship • obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in the year 1925 • became the first Malay prince to obtain a degree from a British university.

Continuation of education……….. • at the University, Tunku formed the Malay Association of Great Britain in 1926 • elected as the first Secretary • In 1938, Tunku furthered his studies in Law at the Inner Temple, England. • Tunku served as a Cadet at the Law Consultancy Department in Alor Setar. • In 1946, Tunku went to England again to adjourn his studies in Law, this time in the Inns of Court • completed his studies in 1949 and was awarded Bachelor in Law and Jurisprudence.

CAREER • Chairman of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Kedah Division • Transferred to Kuala Lumpur to be the Deputy Public Prosecutor in the Federal Law Department • Resigned from the government service- became President of UMNO, replacing Dato’ Onn Jaafar on 26 August 1951. • Elected as the First Chief Minister of Malaya and the Minister of Home Affairs • Tunku was proclaimed as the First Prime Minister of the Federation of Malaya after declaring Independence in Merdeka Stadium, Kuala Lumpur

RETIREMENT • continued leading the Islamic Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (PERKIM) which he started in 1960 • President of the Regional Islamic Da’awah Council of South East Asia and Pacific (RISEAP) • Secretary-General of the Islamic Secretariat in Jeddah • Honorary Life President of the Football Association of Malaysia • Active in the field of writing (eg:“As You See It” Sudut Pandangan (Viewpoints), Something to Remember, etc)

AWARDS • 1958 Kedah Order of Merit • 1960 Degree of Doctor of Laws, Cambridge University, Ramon Magsaysay Award • 1962 Doctorate from University of Aligarh, India • 1965 Honorary Degree of the Premier of South Korea • Medal of Appreciation (First Class), Thai Red Cross • 1969 Tunisia’s Highest Award • 1970 Honorary Doctor of Letters, University of Oxford • 1975 Honorary Doctorate of Law, University Sains Malaysia • 1977 Doctorate from University of Songkla, Thailand

MORE AWARDS • Honorary Member of Malaysian Medical Academy • National Sports Personality Award • 1981Honorary Doctorate of Law, University Kebangsaan Malaysia • United States Distinguished Service Award • Darjah Utama Seri Mahkota Negara • Yang Amat Dihormati Darjah Kerabat Negeri Perlis • Doctorate in Law from University of Sydney • Doctorate of Law from University of the Philippines • Chancellor’s Award from University Malaya • Darjah Utama Negeri Melaka

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS • completed his legal studies in 1949, despite numerous interruptions • had organised the Malay students in Great Britain through “Kesatuan Melayu Great Britain” (The Malay Association of Great Britain) • elected as the secretary of the association • served as District Officer at various district in Kedah • became the President of UMNO • appointed as the Chief Minister and Minister of Home Affairs • he become the first Prime Minister • was appointed as Secretary- General of Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC).
