  1. Global Standards Collaboration (GSC) 14 Intelligent Transport Systems Presenter: Soeren Hess Chairman TC ITS

  2. Highlight of Current Activities (1) • Standards, specifications and Technical Reports for ITS • Application Requirements and facilities • Communications Architecture • Transport and Network • Media • Security • First set of standards to be adopted October 2009 • Basic set of applications • Communication Architecture • GeoNetworking • European Profile standard for 5.9 GHz • Security and privacy (TVRA)

  3. Highlight of Current Activities (2) • Coordination of standardisation activities with PSOs and a variety of stakeholders incl. industry organisations (C2C CC) • International ETSI workshop on ITS with 125+ participants • Discussing strategic direction • Automotive industry – road operators – telecom operators – suppliers – regulators – international stakeholders • Contributing to a standardisation roadmap • Next workshop February 2010 • Regulatory activities for harmonised implementation and deployment to ensure interoperability • ITS action plan – EU Directive – Standardisation Mandate

  4. Strategic Direction • Standardisation as required by stakeholders and users • Automotive industry – Road operators – Public operators • Cooperative systems to promote Safety on the roads • Cooperative systems to promote Traffic efficiency • Achieving environmental improvements – green agenda.. • Standardisation in close cooperation with other PSOs • International standardisation organisations – ISO TC 204 • National Standardisation and regulation • Worldwide interoperability • Field Operational Tests contributing to standardisation

  5. Challenges • Alignment of standardisation activities world wide • Avoid conflicting standards • Avoid double work – and resource dilution • Alignment of different interests from different stakeholders • Focus on cooperative systems but include a variety of technologies and media • A technical Roadmap where standardisation leads to commercial deployment and world wide interoperability of ITS

  6. Next Steps/Actions • Test specification for the initial set of standards and specifications • Identify next set of standards to be developed • Following agreed communications architecture • Ensuring timely standards meeting stakeholders requirements • Priority of activities to ensure coherent standards development • European and world wide coordination and Roadmap • Alignment with regulatory activities on ITS in Europe • Leading to harmonised implementation and deployment • Major Field Operational Tests
