  1. FISHERIES SUBSIDIES National Chamber of Fisheries Ecuador.

  2. Ecuador on Fisheries Subsidies • Consider all subsidies detrimental for fair trade and sustainability. (Friend of fish). • Instruct government officials to coordinate with national counterparts to develop a regional position on this issue. • Recognize the need to develop and regulate its artesian low scale fisheries

  3. Ecuador on FisheriesSubsidies • Support the South East Pacific Permanent Commission (CPPS) efforts to coordinate and try to establish a regional position on this subject. • Especial concern on specific issues such as developed countries subsidies on high sea fleet affecting trans zonal highly migratory species such as tuna.

  4. Ecuador on Fisheries Subsidies • Recognize that important progress such as definitions on fisheries subsides and guide for assessment have been achieved. • Request CPPS to perform case evaluation (effect of fisheries subsidies on tuna trade and sustainability for Ecuador). • Need to find ways to move discussion into action (WTO rules).

  5. From the National Chamber of Fisheries. • We feel the detrimental effects of subsidies. On words from a local fisherman, we quote: “ I do not understand, there is no tuna in the ocean, every day we have to increase the effort, but prices keep low”.
