  1. IEEE-USAPrecollege Activities: Teacher Reward (Grant) Program……and more! Ken Reid, IEEE-USA Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology IUPUI School of Engineering and Technology Purdue University Department of Engineering Education Ron Rodgers 3rd Grade Teacher Eagle Elementary School, Brownsburg, IN

  2. Rising Above the Gathering Storm(National Academies of Engineering) Why are we interested? “Education in science, mathematics, and technology has become a focus of intense concern within the business and academic communities. The domestic and world economies depend more and more on science and engineering. But our primary and secondary schools do not seem able to produce enough students with the interest, motivation, knowledge, and skills they will need to compete and prosper in such a world.” Question: Do you LOVE math and science?

  3. Today: • What is the IEEE-USA PEC? • What can IEEE-USA Precollege Education Committee offer teachers? • Online lesson plans and other resources? • Teacher / Engineer Partnership Award • Teacher Reward/Grant Program

  4. IEEE-USA Precollege Education Committee • Help improve the quality of precollege education and to raise the level of functional and technological literacy of United States students by placing emphasis on mathematics and science.  • Keep alive the innate curiosity of young children about science as they move into middle school and high school, so that they will continue to study mathematics, science, and technology. • Engineering is more than “You have to love math and science” – curiosity, innovation, creativity, etc.

  5. Your IEEE-USA PEC

  6. Global programs, local implementation • Teacher in Service Program • http://tryengineering.org • Global initiative, implemented at the local level • Initial training at the Region level (Region 4: Summer ’06) • Designed to flow to Sections, then to individuals Example: Central Indiana Section activities

  7. Teacher in Service Program • Linked to national standards • .pdf with materials, learning goals, age, learner outcomes… • Materials for a classroom of 30 < $100 (usually less than $30!)

  8. Design and Build a Better Candy Bag • Materials: scale: plastic, string, tape, rulers, scissors, paper, pencils… candy • Why? Teamwork; problem solving; calculations of area, volume, weight; art… • Basic procedure: • Given a set of materials, student teams design a bag to hold the most volume or weight before failure. • Failure analysis • Don’t like candy? Brownsburg Challenger Center does “Design a Moonrock Bag”

  9. Rotational Equilibrium: A Question of Balance Demonstrate the concept of rotational equilibrium, by building and testing a Mobile

  10. Teacher workshop, Indianapolis, Summer 2007

  11. Realistically helping in a K-12 environment • Teachers must tie activities with state standards • Safety / Security and entry into a school • Teacher resource overload • One on one contact • Explain activities from the viewpoint of your audience • Use the power of your Section! • PACE, Section Precollege Rep, Newsletter….

  12. IEEE-USA Precollege Education Committee

  13. PEC Teacher-Engineer Partnership Award • The IEEE-USA Precollege Education Committee (PEC) Teacher-Engineer Partnership Award • Recognizes collaborative activities between K-12 teachers and IEEE members. • Unique professional, technical and literary contributions to precollege students.

  14. Past winners… • William Speed & Mark Rognstad, Region 6 (HI) • Created HURC (Hawiian Underwater Robot Challenge) • Robert Cornacchioli & James Jensen, Region 1 (MA) • NetdDay, Solar Sprint, etc. • Joy Huebel & Renato Recio, Region 5 (TX) • Partners in Education mentoring program

  15. What can I (or my section) do? • Find examples of partnerships • Or create new partnerships • Contact your Region precollege representative • Nominate!

  16. Teacher reward / grant program • The program/project must be a new and/or unique idea • The program/project must take place in 2008* • The teacher must work with an IEEE member* (the IEEE member can be a partner, mentor, or a resource member) • Typical maximum ~$500 • Typically not for capital equipment

  17. Examples • Electromagnetics in Action (R2) • 7th – 8th grade • Magnetics, RF interference demonstrated • Robotics Summer Workshop (R4) • Robotics using Mindstorm robot kits • Student Centered Robotics Assembly CD Guide (R6) • State standards require robotics: students to produce instructional CD • Electronic Stethoscopes (R2) • Tie STEM concepts to real life • Robot Cars (R4) • Excellent example of a project growing to reach students beyond the original scope! …. More to come …

  18. What can I (or my section) do? • Find a teacher with an idea, or present an idea to a teacher… • Visit the PEC Web page • Example application • Contact information (questions … ask!) • Apply!

  19. Resources from your IEEE-USA PEC • myScience myMath myEngineering • Middle school brochure • Engineering “Go For It” Magazine • Careers in Electrical Electronics and Computer Engineering • High school brochure • Partnership with JETS • TEAMS competitions www.jets.org
