  2. What does the module focus on? Information Literacy Meaning: the ability to find information, determine its credibility and relevance and communicate that information effectively to others. The research process Meaning: a systematic approach to gathering information for the purpose of answering questions and solving problems in the pursuit of new knowledge (Blaxter, 1996) And WHY? To study effectively To use all the resources and information sources available To begin to develop critical ability (a graduate) The NHS should be providing healthcare based on evidence of its effectiveness This is the business of every healthcare professional School of Healthcare FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH

  3. School of Healthcare FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH • Does research evidence matter to consumers of health services?- 3 headlines • Eating dark chocolate can help prevent diabetes reported the Daily Mail (22 March 2005). A small study in healthy volunteers provided evidence that dark chocolate can have a beneficial effect on the way the body handles glucose • Half of probiotic products available don't do what they say they do, reported eight newspapers (8 August 2006). • Deaths from cervical cancer could be reduced by three quarters if 12 year old girls received a vaccine, reported five newspapers (4 September 2006). David Clarke University of Leeds

  4. School of Healthcare FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH • What issues are topical in your professional areas • May 2006- Screening newborn babies for hearing defects is effective pilot finds………….(BMJ, 2006; 332:1176 (20 May) • Taking iron supplements during pregnancy may be harmful for non-anaemic women, reported four newspapers (31 May 2007). The newspapers accurately summarised the main findings of a generally well-conducted randomised controlled trial, although some reports included findings not derived from the study. BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology 2007;114(6):684-8. • Children as young as eight years old should be given statins, reported four newspapers (7 August 2007). The newspapers generally report results from a well-conducted randomised controlled trial accurately, although the authors stated that the optimal age for statin initiation is not known and further research is needed.Cirrculation 2007;116(6):664-8. • Ultrasound assessment of foetal 'nuchal thickness' (accumulation of fluid at the back of the neck) as a preliminary screening test for chromosome abnormalities is not supported by scientific data. As a result, pregnant women may be unnecessarily referred for invasive tests that carry a risk of miscarriage, leading to the loss of up to 3200 normal babies a year. Ultrasound 2007;15(3):177-184.
