  2. Overview • Pop-culture and football • Misconduct by players • The problem • Solutions • Conclusion

  3. Pop Culture and Football • The NFL has emerged as one of our country’s most watched sports and is growing rapidly in viewers and attendance each year. • The Super Bowl is the most watched championship of all professional sports.

  4. Misconduct by Players • 21% of the players in the NFL from 1996 to 1998 had been arrested for serious crimes at some point in their lives. • “Eventually NFL prospects wont be invited to Pro Day if there is a question of character” • 13 players on the two Super Bowl teams St. Louis Rams and Tennessee Titans previously had been arrested before they played Super Bowl XXXIV

  5. Understanding the Problem • The point has been stated by some players that the problems that occur off of the field should be their personal business and that they shouldn’t be punished by the NFL for them. The problem with this idea is that players faces are all over NFL advertising commercials and ads.

  6. Solutions • Professional football players in the NFL are getting in more trouble year after year creating a problem for future NFL prospects, making it harder for them to get into the NFL. in the NFL have come up with the “3 strikes you’re out” rule for player who continue to get into trouble off of the field. This rule hasn’t been approved yet because administration feels that three strikes is three too many.

  7. Understanding the Problem • Athletes that are privileged enough to play in the NFL need to understand that by being a professional athlete they also are taking on the responsibility of being a role model to fans, and should therefore conduct themselves as responsible well behaved adults.

  8. Conclusion • Players should understand that being a part of the NFL is so much more then just putting on a jersey every Sunday and playing, it also involves setting a good example for viewers and future NFL prospects.
