  1. Evolution of Communist Thought

  2. Communism: a political and economic system of organization • Goal was to create a classless society where everyone was equal • Socialist Republic: no private property, state would collectively own and distribute the goods

  3. Theory vs. Application Marx Lenin • History was the story of class struggle • The struggle was capitalism against the proletariatandthe peasants • The proletariat and peasants were not capable of leading a revolution and need the guidance of professional revolutionaries (Bolsheviks) • History was the story of class struggle (Proletariat vs. Bourgeoisie) • The struggle was between capitalists and the proletariat, or workers • The proletariatsnumbers would become so great and their condition so poor that a spontaneous revolution would occur

  4. Theory vs. Application Marx Lenin • After the revolution, the state needed to be run by asingle party with disciplined, centrally directed administers in order to ensure its goals. • The revolution would end with a “dictatorship of the proletariat” – the communal ownership of wealth

  5. Three Major Differences Between Marx and Lenin: • Who is involved? • Lenin included the peasants in the struggle against the capitalists – not enough workers • How will it occur? • Lenin believed a group was needed to lead the revolution, it would not be spontaneous • What is the end result? • Lenin believed a single party dictatorship not the proletariat would be in charge after the revolution.
