  2. 2009 – 10: Smart Futures Fund • Latest round of the Qld Government’s Smart Futures Fund was launched 9 September 2009. • Close Date is 2pm, 5 November 2009. • Information is available on the DEEDI website at: http://www.industry.qld.gov.au/smartfuturesfund • Some minor changes have been made to the 09/10 funding guidelines. • See following slides for further information:

All applications should address one of the Priority Areas: • Supporting research & commercialisation of Qld tropical expertise. • Supporting climate change adaptation and/or mitigation, and renewable energy. • Building social science capabilities aligned to the Toward Q2 Tomorrow’s Queensland priorities.

  4. General Info – Skills Fund • CV’s will NOT be requested for any Skills grant program. • Maximum word limits will be recommended for all SF applications, and enforced on some forms.

  5. Smart Futures Fund 2009 – 2010:The Skills Fund To retain Queensland’s brightest and attract the world’s best minds - $23.3M over 4 years • The Innovation Skills Fund comprises the following: • Premier’s Fellowships– $1.25M over 5 years • Fellowships – Level 1 ($300K) & Level 2 ($150K) over 3 years • Researchers-in-Residence – up to $100K for 6 to 24 months • Entrepreneurs-in-Residence – up to $100K for 3 to 18 • NEW: Innovation Investment Exchange – up to $45K for 12 to 30 weeks • PhD Scholarships - $24K over 3 years

Smart Futures Premier’s Fellowships & Smart Futures Fellowships • Applicants must apply for the full amount of funding. • Applicants who have previously received a: • Smart State Premier’s Fellowship • Smart Futures Premier’s Fellowship • Smart State Fellowship, or a • Smart State Futures Fellowship of the same or higher value are not able to apply.

  7. Smart Futures Commercialisation Fellowships – Researcher-in-Residence (RIR) • The RIR Fellowships will now be offered for 6 to 24 months instead of 3 to 12 months • Applicants must complete a milestone table outlining their fellowship activities.

  8. Smart Futures Commercialisation Fellowships – Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR) • The EIR Fellowships will now be offered for 3 to 18 months instead of 3 to 36 months • Applicants must complete a milestone table outlining their fellowship activities.

  9. Smart Futures Commercialisation Fellowships – Innovation Investment Exchange (IIE) • New program - the IIE Fellowships will be offered for 12 to 30 weeks. • Description – for Queensland based venture capital fund managers to engage in exchange programs with overseas venture capital firms. • Key objective – to strengthen Queensland links with the international investment community.

  10. Smart Futures PhD Scholarships • New condition – Applicants must hold an approved PhD research scholarship • $8000/yr for three years; optional $2,000 bonus. (previously scheme was for $7,000/yr with optional $1,500 bonus)

  11. General Info – Smart Futures Fund 2009-10 • All applications are now in Adobe PDF format (a MS Word version is available on request). • University applications must be signed off by the DVC. Applications not signed off correctly will not be accepted. • Project start dates should allow time for assessment and approval processes.

Smart Futures Fund 2009 – 2010:The Projects Fund To create new collaborations across research and industry that will drive new innovations - $60M over 4 years • The Projects Fund comprises the following: • National and International Research Alliances Program (NIRAP) – up to $2M over 3 years • Research-Industry Partnerships Program (RIPP) – up to $1M over 3 years • Partnerships-Alliances Facilitation Program (PAFP) – open all year. Up to $50K. • Proof of Concept Fund (POC) – project based open all year. Up to $50K over one year.

  13. National and International Research Alliances Program (NIRAP) • An addition to the guidelines advises that contract research is not eligible as a collaborative relationship.

  14. Research-Industry Partnerships Program (RIPP) • The industry partner(s) must now contribute a 25% minimum of the the required cash match to the project.   15. Partnerships-Alliances Facilitation Program (PAFP) • Maximum funding award is now $50K • Max. payable to consultants = $20K • Funding can be claimed ONLY from the date of letter of offer – NOT date of application • The application form, once countersigned by the Dept, will become the financial assistance agreement for the project.

  16. Proof of Concept Fund (POC) – Project Based • The application now includes more questions about IP management plan and freedom to operate. (This has been identified as an area of weakness on previous applications). • The application form, once countersigned by the Dept, will become the financial assistance agreement for the project. • POC Applications are assessed quarterly.
