MY ROLE 8 Years Experience at U of U overseeing institutional marketing and new media • Hired October 19, 2009 • Oversee Idaho’s Web strategy and Web presence • Manage our team of nine Web coordinators, two interns, and developers as assigned • Complete Site Core migration, support the capital campaign, and build our social media presence OVERVIEW

  4. ACCESSIBILITY Three considerations: • Develop Web sites that are not only accessible, but optimized for people with disabilities • Prevent Idaho from reverting back to the dark ages of the internet (1990s) • Avoid legal action directed toward the University OVERVIEW

  6. MOVING TOWARDS ACCESSIBILITY The ADA requires all companies to make “reasonable accommodations” for the disabled. Modifications or adjustments to the Web site that enable an individual with a disability to perform the essential functions. Understanding the law

MOVING TOWARDS ACCESSIBILITY • Access instruction page (includes email hyperlink to communicate accessibility problems) • Provide support for text browsers (Jaws) • "Alt" tags for graphics • Hyperlink photographs with descriptive text "D" • Caption all audio and video clips by using "CC" hyperlinks • Alternative mechanisms for on-line forms (such as email or voice/TTY phone numbers) Understanding the law

MOVING TOWARDS ACCESSIBILITY • Avoid access barriers such as the posting of documents in PDF, table, newspaper or frame format. • Have access to a “speakable prompt” for each item • All functionality should be accessible from the keyboard • All color usage should be under the control of the user • No reliance on timed functions • Ability to disable flash content or animations Understanding the law

PATH TO ADA COMPLIANCE • Purchased Site sort solution for $1,400 • Software will help us establish a baseline / current state for uidaho.edu • Group meeting early December to acquaint ITS professionals and Web coordinators on the use of the tool • Still seeking additional resources: consultants and interns to assist with the initial assessment.
