  2. Safety • It is important to know what safety equipment is available to assure you are properly protected against the hazards of welding. • Ask, don’t assume you are protected. UVU CRT 2009

  3. Safety Practices • Physical Hazards • Electric Shock • Welding Arc Rays • Burns • Welding Environment • Flammables UVU CRT 2009

  4. Fire Extinguisher • It is always a good practice to know where the fire extinguishers are located and know how to use them. • It is not “if” but “when” a fire will occur. UVU CRT 2009

  5. Welding Hood • Protects the eyes and face from the damaging welding rays. • Helmet shade is adjustable from 9 to 13. UVU CRT 2009

  6. Welding Gloves and Jacket • Heavy leather gloves and leather jacket protect the skin from the sparks and heat during the welding process. UVU CRT 2009

  7. Work Boots • Leather work boots should be worn to prevent the welding slag and sparks from burning the feet. • Lace them all the way and place pants over the tongue. UVU CRT 2009

  9. Eye Wash Station • An eye wash station is available in the shop and used whenever any foreign contaminates enter the eyes. UVU CRT 2009

  10. Welding Respirator • A respirator must be worn whenever welding coated or galvanized steel. • Failure to do this will result in serious illness. UVU CRT 2009

  11. Hearing Protection • When grinding wear the proper hearing protection such as ear plugs or ear muffs. UVU CRT 2009

  12. Vehicle Protection • When welding protect: • Glass • Interior Parts • Painted Surfaces • Electrical Systems Welding Blanket UVU CRT 2009

  13. Welding and Vehicle Electronics Before Welding • Disconnect battery • Place ground close to weld area • Keep welder away from vehicle • Remove vehicles computer if welding within 12 inches of it UVU CRT 2009

  14. Continuing Safely • These are only the basics of welding safety. • Be sure to follow any manufacturers recommendations regarding safety. • If you are unsure ask the instructor. UVU CRT 2009
