Parallelogram Activity

In this activity, students work individually and collaboratively to draw various patterns described by the teacher. They draw a parallelogram, symmetrical Venn diagram, Star of David, Peace Sign, and a sine wave. Students rate their confidence level and grade their drawings to reflect on their learning experience.

  1. Parallelogram Activity • Take a blank piece of paper from your folder. • Task: the teacher will describe a pattern. You try to draw it based on the description. • Work alone! • Do not talk. • Do not look at each other’s papers. • Take notes during the lecture.

  2. Draw a Parallelogram • Parallelogram (height = 2 in.; width = 4 in.), skewed 45 degrees to the right.

  3. Draw a Venn Diagram • Symmetrical Venn diagram consisting of three 1 inch diameter circles • Centered in the middle of the parallelogram • Area in the middle of the Venn diagram where all three circles overlap

  4. Draw a Star of David • Draw a Star of David to the left of the Venn Diagram, consisting of two equilateral triangles with 1 inch edges.

  5. Draw a Peace Sign • Draw a Peace Sign, with a diameter of 1 inch, to the right of the Venn Diagram.

  6. Draw a Sine Wave Above Parallelogram • Amplitude = 1 inch • The top edge of the parallelogram defines amplitude = -1 • Starts at top left corner of the parallelogram • Ends at top right corner of the parallelogram • Completes exactly three cycles

  7. Rate Your Confidence Level 1-10 • 1 = not confident at all • 10 = very confident that your drawing is correct • Write your rating on the back of your paper in large font so I can see it from the front

  8. 5 Minutes Assign Group Roles Read the “Description of Roles” Determine who at your table will take each role.

  9. 5Minutes Now Work as a Team • Do not make marks on your original drawings. • Take out a clean piece of paper and appoint an official drawer for the team • Work together to draw the pattern described • Use all your notes and original drawings • Ask any questions of the professor (raise your hand if there is a question) • Consult with other teams if you wish • Each team must produce ONE CONSENSUS DRAWING

  10. 1 = not confident at all • 10 = very confident that your drawing is correct • Write your rating on the back of the team paper in large font so I can see it from the front Rate Your Confidence Level 1-10 in Your Team

  11. 1Minute Grade Your Drawings • Compare both your individual and team drawings to the one below. • Assign each of your drawings a grade of A-F.

  12. 2Minutes Lessons from the Parallelogram Activity • Individually write down 3 ways the team drawing experience differed from the individual drawing experience. • Individually write down one insight about how this may relate to teaching and learning.

  13. 5Minutes Lessons from the Parallelogram Activity • As a team, share your experiences and insights • Be prepared to share one agreed upon insight from your team
