  1. Overview of Socratic Seminars AP Literature and Composition Ms. Molla

  2. Lesson Objective: SWBAT: Achieve a deeper understanding about the ideas and values in texts, systematically question and examine issues and principles related to a particular content, and articulate different points-of-view.

  3. Background: • In a Socratic Seminar, the participants carry the burden of responsibility for the quality of the discussion. Good discussions occur when participants study the text closely in advance, listen actively, share their ideas and questions in response to the ideas and questions of others, and search for evidence in the text to support their ideas. The discussion is not about right answers; it is not a debate. Students are encouraged to think out loud and to exchange ideas openly while examining ideas in a rigorous, thoughtful, manner.

  4. Preparation: • All participants read the text in advance and prepare your contributions before participating in the seminar. • You will always need to number each paragraph of the texts in order to easily identify/refer to the points you are making and guide the rest of the inside and outside circles. • You will need to prepare your Open-Ended Questions and/or Critical Reasoning Analysis before entering the seminar. This will be your ticket into the seminar.

  5. Seminar Norms: • Don’t raise hands • Listen carefully • Address one another respectfully • Base any opinions on the text . • Address comments to the group (no side conversations) • Use sensitivity to take turns and not interrupt others • Monitor ‘air time’…(step up/ step down) • Be courageous in presenting your own thoughts and reasoning, but be flexible and willing to change your mind in the face of new and compelling evidence.

  6. During the seminar (Inside circle) • Relate your statements to particular passages, to clarify, and elaborate. • Use quotes and key vocabulary to help convey your comprehension of the text. • You will are required to contribute 6 insightful ideas, questions, responses, and/or analysis during your participation in the circle. • Every time you feel you have contributed something insightful, you will place a popsicle stick in your cup.

  7. During the seminar (Outside circle) • You will be responsible for taking notes on the discussion being held inside of the circle. Your notes should pertain to key concepts and insightful information that will help your analysis and overall comprehension of the text. • You will also be responsible for “coaching” and evaluating one partner that is participating inside of the circle. • After the inside circle discussion is complete, you will meet with your partner and review your evaluation and provide pluses and deltas of their performance.
