  1. Metric System

  2. Basic Conversions*4th graders only need to know the following conversions:

  3. Converting from one unit to another 1. Students can make T-charts to help them convert g kg 1,000 1 2,000 2 3,000 3 4,000 4 2. Students can use multiplication to help them convert 7 km = 7,000 m 13 m = 1,300 cm 7x1,000 13x100=1,300

  4. Converting more than one unit at a time: 1. Always convert the larger unit to the smaller unit 5 kg 345 g = _____g 5 x 1,000 = 5,000 g 2. Then add the two amounts together 5,000 + 345 = 5,345 g

  5. Adding or subtracting Units 1. Convert to the smaller unit 45 km 298 m + 60 km 13 m 45 x 1,000 = 45,000 60 x 1,000 = 60,000 2. Then add the amounts together 45,000 + 298 = 45,298 60,000 + 13 = 60,013 3. Add the two measurements 45,298 + 60,013 = 105,311
