  2. FOLKTALE Mullah Nasruddin: The Trial my devotion towards you?” Mullah’s neighbour, Ahmed was in the balcony and he heard this. He decided to play a prank on Mullah. He threw a bag full of 100 gold coins towards Mullah. A shocked and surprised Mullah opened the bag to fnd a 100 gold coins inside. He got up and went home. He called his wife and showed her the bag and said, “See! I am such a good devotee of the Almighty that he gave me a 100 gold coins.” His wife happily took out a coin from the bag and went to the market. Seeing Mullah’s wife shopping, their neighbour Ahmed’s wife, grew suspicious. She had a word with Ahmed about this. Ahmed stormed into Mullah Nasruddin’s house and angrily demanded his 100 gold coins back. Mullah remarked back, “How dare you ask for my gold coins? I know you overheard me when I asked the Almighty God for the gold coins.” “I should sue you in court for justice!” an angry Ahmed replied. Mullah pleaded, “My friend Ahmed! I am a poor man. I don’t have any good clothes or even means to travel. The judge will surely trust you more.” A resigned Ahmed gave Mullah Nasruddin his jacket and horse too! They went to the court where the judge listened to Ahmed’s complaint. He turned to Mullah and asked him, “Do you want to say anything?" “My neighbour Ahmed is completely mad”, replied Mullah. The judge asked Mullah if he had any proof. “Yes!” replied Mullah. “Well he assumes everything I own is his. First it’s the gold coins, then it’s the jacket, then it’s the horse,” replied Mullah. The judge asked “Is this true Ahmed?” Ahmed was very upset and angry on hearing this. He replied angrily to the judge, “Yes!” The judge looked at both of them and said, “There is no point to Ahmed’s complaint. You can both leave.” Well now, do you think Ahmed’s prank on Mullah was worth it? Mullah Nasruddin’s wife was worried that her husband didn’t earn a living. This caused her a lot of stress. She thought her husband, like other husbands, should work and earn a living for the family. She angrily said, “Why can’t you be like normal husbands and do some work and earn a living?” “Dear wife, I am a worker of the Almighty God. How can I do another job?” replied Mullah. “Dearest husband, maybe then you can ask your God to give you something in return for your service,” retorted his wife. Mullah answered calmly, “Dearest wife! You are right. I hadn’t thought of asking God for any returns for my service. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t give me anything." Mullah Nasruddin went to the garden near his house. He sat down on the ground and opened his arms, looking towards the sky. He said loudly, “Oh God, since I am your humble and devoted servant, will you give me a 100 gold coins for

  4. SAM Visits THE HAND IN THE DESERT Discover A New Place Look behind me, and behold a giant hand that stretches out from the ground itself! I’m at the Atacama Desert in Chile, and this is unbelievably cool. Along the deserted Pan-American Highway, the monotony of the drive is instantly shattered on the appearance of this 11 meter high hand protruding out of the sand. I was unaware of the existence of this monument, and my fellow travelers kept it that way. The result was total surprise and I took my time wondering about the origin of this seemingly alien yet human-looking hand that seemed to be coming out the sand. After they had their fun at my bewildered expressions, my fellow travelers told me that this monu- ment is a work of the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal (try getting that right on the frst try). It was built in the 1980s and was fnanced by a local organization. I wondered what gave him the idea for such a sculpture and was told that the motion of hands rising from the ground is an obses- sion of his. In fact, they told me, there’s another giant-hand monument, called Monument to the Drowned, also by the same artist. The monument, though bizarre, is the artist’s way of expressing loneliness, sorrow and the gross injustice of human rights that Chileans faced in the past. Its exaggerated size also conveys human helplessness and vulnerability. Even its location is a take on the feelings of isolation and despair. Looking back, this is one of the strangest and yet thought-provoking statues I’ve ever seen. Not to mention that it nicely breaks the monotony of a desert drive. find these 8 objects in the picture

  5. PONDERING CORNER Why do elephants never forget? Elephants are known to have a great memory and have the largest brain mass of all mammals, weighing a whopping 5 kilograms! Elephant Cognition is the study of the mind of an elephant and studies have shown that elephants have a brain very similar to that of humans. They have a highly convoluted hippocampus and an elephant’s brain has almost as many neurons as the human brain. Elephants have a high ‘Encephalization Quotient’ or EQ. This quotient is based on the actual size of the brain as compared to the size projected by scientists (the size they expect it to be based on the animal’s body weight). This means that the smaller the ratio is, the less intelligent the animal is. This ratio contributes to the elephant’s amazing memory! Elephants can remember other elephants and humans upon seeing them. They are known to hold grudges against those who have injured or hurt them and raise alarms to protect their herd against these dangers. They are also able to remember the location of sources of water and the location of sources of food. 4

  6. Coley & Bumbley About health and more! What does your food have in it? Read Food Nutrition Labels Our body is all we have. But are we really aware of all that goes inside our body? Every packaged item of food has a nutritional label behind it. They tell you what’s inside the food you’re eating and list its parts. Fresh food that doesn’t come pre-packaged sometimes has nutrition facts, too. Most nutrients are measured in grams, also written as g. Some nutrients are measured in milli- grams, or mg. Milligrams are very tiny — there are 1,000 milligrams in 1 gram. The nutrition label always lists a serving size, which is an amount of food, such as 1 cup of cereal, two cookies, or fve pretzels. The label also tells you how many servings are contained in the particular package of food. The key nutritional ingredients to look out for are the amounts of total fat, saturated fat, sugar and sodium/salt. You can refer to following proportion to understand the amount of intake that is considered to be healthy. Total fat 0-3g (best), 3.1-20g (okay), 20g+ (sometimes) Saturated Fat 0-1.5g (best), 0-1.6g (okay), 5g+ (sometimes) Sugar 0-5g (best), 5.1-15g (okay), 15g+ (sometimes) Sodium 0-120mg (best), 121-600mg (okay), 600mg+ (sometimes) 5

  7. The Pirate Poodle Once there was a Pirate Poodle, And he sailed the briny seas From the land of Yankee Doodle Southward to the Caribbees. Mine is indeed a hopeless case; To strive to please the human race! He would boast with tales outlandish, Of his valor and renown; And his cutlass he would brandish With a fearful pirate frown. So ferocious was his manner All his crew looked on, aghast; And his fearful pirate banner Floated from his pirate mast. He reiterated proudly Naught had power to make him quail; Yet when thunder roared too loudly He would turn a trife pale. And he turned a little paler When there came a sudden squall; For this funny little sailor Was ridiculously small. And whenever a storm portended He’d betake himself below. So much fear and courage blended Did a pirate ever show?

  9. a comic story sir dig-a-lot The Legend of King Tut Rohan was sitting with his friend Sir Dig-a-Lot and wondering what lesson will he be hearing today. Sir Dig-a-Lot said, “Since you love hearing about ancient Egypt, let's talk about the legend of King Tut. 'Pharaoh' is a title given to rulers of ancient dynasties of Egypt. King Tut was a Pharoah of the 18th dynasty of Egypt from 1332 BC to 1323 BC. He was born in the city of Akhetaten, the then capital of Egypt. He became the king at the age of nine and ruled Egypt when its power was at the peak and died at the age of 18. Given his young age, King Tut had powerful court advisors who helped him rule Egypt well. Even at a young age he revived the falling economic fortunes of Egypt by building diplomatic relations with his neighbours.” 8

  10. Rohan curiously asked, “How do we know all this about him?” Sir Dig-a-Lot answered, “Howard Carter, an archaeologist from England discovered the tomb of King Tut. Ancient Egyptians buried their Pharaohs with things they thought their kings would need after death. The tomb of King Tut was discovered 3,000 years after his death and contained beautiful treasures and his personal belongings like armor and gifts from different parts of the world. “A complete analysis of the tomb made historians and scientists predict the age and the possible cause of death of the king. He is the world’s best known Pharaoh mainly because his tomb was best preserved and had over 3,000 treasures. The myth of the curse did the rounds to make it more popular. The curse was that if anyone dared to open the tomb of King Tut, he or she would suffer bad luck.” “Wow, that is a fascinating tale. I hope I could have a look at King Tut's treasures!” Rohan said. “You can! The treasure and other things found in his tomb are among the most trav- eled artifacts in the world. Several exhibitions around the world have allowed people to view them and experience this fascinating part of ancient Egypt. Maybe some day your father can take you to one of them,” Sir Dig-a-Lot said. “Oh I hope he does! I will tell him for sure,” said Rohan. 9
