  2. FOLKTALE Mullah Nasruddin: The Guarantee The next day, Nasruddin told his friend about what had happened at the king’s court. His friend said, “Nasruddin, how could you ever agree to such an impossible task? You cannot even control your donkey enough to make it stand still, and now you have guaranteed that in eight years you would have taught him how to read? There is no way you can escape that prison sentence.” “Relax,” replied Nasruddin calmly. “Eight years is a long time, my friend! By then, our king will probably be dead or he will not be in power anymore. And even if he is still the king at the end of eight years, chances are that my donkey would be dead by then. Worse come to worse, if by the end of seven years, both the king and my donkey are alive, I will still have one whole year to devise a plan to escape punishment." One day, Nasruddin was at the king’s court when the king turned to him and said, “Mullah Nasruddin, you are always boasting about your wisdom and cleverness. So tell me, can you teach your donkey how to read?” Nasruddin replied, “Of course! That’s quite an easy task.” “I don’t believe you,” said the king. “I mean it and I can prove it to you,” said Nasruddin. The king said, “Would you take it on as a challenge, then?” “Absolutely,” replied Nasruddin. “If you give me fve thousand gold coins right now, I guarantee that by the end of eight years, I will have taught my donkey how to read.” The king said, “Fine, I agree. But my condition is that if the donkey is unable to read by then, I will have you put in prison where you will be tortured every day.” Both of them agreed to this deal and Nasruddin left for home. 1

I'll bet you cannot Arrive at that spot As quickly as I can get there." Quoth the Hare: "You are surely insane. Pray, what has happened to your brain? You seem pretty sick. Call a doctor in, quick, And let him prescribe for your pain." "Never mind," said the Tortoise. "Let's run! Will you bet me?" "Why, certainly." "Done!" While the slow Tortoise creeps Mr. Hare makes four leaps, 2

  4. Pondering Corner This question of who owns space comes to the minds of people, is it everybody’s or nobody’s? This is coming to light now as multiple nations and private companies are capable of space exploration. The reason is so because people did not consider space as a solid or attainable thing. But now due to an increase of interest in space travels, it has become pretty predominant that space will be owned in the future. Currently space exploration is controlled by the UN Outer Space Treaty of 1967. But in our technological era this treaty is inadequate. In the present time and era, scientists and explorers are briniging forward thoughts of mining and exploiting space resources. This involves mostly asteroids which will now fall under the Asteroids Act formed by the US House of Congress Subcommittee on Science, Space and Technology. But mining on asteroids is still under research and development. The Treaty also covers the satellites orbiting around the Earth and two of the principles state that countries are responsible for the damage caused by their satellites and they shall avoid any form of harmful contamination of space and celestial bodies. Who owns space? 3

  5. Sam Visits Kennedy Space Center Discover A New Place There’s so much to do and see at the Kenne- dy Space Center in Florida that I can barely contain myself! The long list of things to see and do here includes visits to the awesome launch pads, an opportunity to see the actual space shuttle Atlantis, see the Saturn V moon rocket and experience loads of other stuf like simulated space rides, lunch with an astronaut and the amazing NASA game Cosmic Quest. My visit here doesn’t include a rocket launch, but that in no way diminished this experi- ence for me. The Kennedy Space Center is huge at 144,000 acres and houses around 700 facilities. I’m at the visitor complex, which itself has enough attractions to keep me occupied. There are museums and space exhibits to explore, with an up-close view of the Atlantis space shuttle, as well as many other interactive exhibit, like the Saturn V exhibit, which is plain awesome! There’s also the shuttle launch experience which is a defnite must for any space-enthusiast, or just anyone who enjoys being amazed. It ofers a simulated experience of how it’s like to be in space! With a launch experience and everything. You can take the guided bus tour that is included in the daily admission pass. It departs every 15 minutes from the entrance. Or you could set out to explore by yourself. There’s so much to see here that a day is never enough. Even the VIP features here like the Cosmic Quest game, and the Astronaut training experience are worth every dime! Name the Space Elements 4

  7. CASA & ASA Discoveries and Inventions Do you know who discovered black holes? Discovery of Black Holes A black hole is an area in space which has a very strong feld of gravity and as a result, light is unable to escape from it. Due to this, black holes  are invisible. In order to observe them, telescopes are equipped with special instruments which observe the behaviour of material and stars surrounding black holes in order to detect their presence. Hawking which defned black holes as we now understand them. His studies revealed character- istics of black holes – their ability to have a tem- perature and give of heat, which played a part in helping future scientists understand them better. There may be three types of black holes (based on their masses)- 1. Miniature Black Holes – Their mass is much smaller than that of the sun. None have been discovered so far. Black holes are formed when a large star dies and collapses into itself. It is this compression of matter into a tiny space, which causes the strong feld of gravity. In 1915, Albert Einstein published his Theory of General Relativity – upon which a majority of modern physics is based. Soon after its publication, German Schwarzschild found solutions to Einstein’s equa- tions and predicted the existence of black holes. In 1970, it was the theoretical work of Stephen 2. Stellar Black Holes – They are formed when a massive star collapses. 3. Supermassive Black Holes – They are most likely formed as a byproduct when a galaxy is formed and as result are at the centers of galaxies. They are surrounded by stars and gas clouds and continue to feed on matter and grow. physicist Karl 6

  9. a comic story sir dig-a-lot Hades “The other night you told me about Hercules in Greek mythology. I want to learn more about Greek mythology,” said Rohan. “Let me tell you about Hades tonight, the God of the dead. He is considered the gatekeeper of the underworld. That was where people went after they died, according to Greek mythology.” 8

  10. “People did not worship Hades but feared him. When the world was being divided by the three sons of Cronos, Zeus took the sky, Poseidon the seas and Hades took the underworld.” “Hades fell in love with Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, the queen of harvest. He kidnapped her against her will and took her to the under- world. Persephone cried for days but Hades was so deeply in love with her that he wanted her to love him. Demeter pleaded to Zeus, who sent his son Hermes as a messenger, to strike a deal with Hades. Zeus knew if he didn’t help Demeter would always be sad and the crops would not grow, leaving people starve to death. 9

  11. Hermes struck a deal that Hades would marry Persephone and she would become the queen of the underworld but after six months Hades would send her back to Demeter. That is why the Greeks believe that Demeter lets flow- ers bloom to welcome her daughter and when it is time for her to leave, she gets upset and sheds all the flowers.” “I loved the story. Greek mythology is interesting, much like Indian,” said Rohan. “It sure is,” concluded Sir Dig-a-Lot. 10

  12. My father bought me a telescope when I was 14 years old. He had known for a long time that I was interested in the mysteries of outer space and fnally bought me my very own telescope! It was quite powerful and I could see certain planets and stars very clearly. I had studied which planets were visible each month and was looking forward to a clear image of Venus one evening. Instead, I saw what looked like a metal shuttle soaring across the sky. What was it? Complete the Story... fun facts with Hamlet the Hamster To know or not to know, that is the question! Well, wouldn’t you prefer to know? Animals in Space Fruit flies - on February 20, 1947, the United States sent some fruit flies into space to study radiation  exposure at high altitudes. Dogs - Laika, a Russian dog, went to space on November 3, 1957. Scientists wanted to study her endurance of harsh conditions of hunger and cold temperatures. Monkeys - Albert I was the first monkey astronaut to be launched into space. He left for his historical space trip from a NASA space station in New Mexico on June 11, 1948. Cats - A cat called Felicette was trained to go into space and was launched on October 18, 1963 to orbit the Earth. She was the first kitty in the cosmos. Spiders - The United States sent a European garden spider couple named Arabella and Anita to visit space on July 28, 1973. Scientists wanted to study the effect of being in the Earth’s orbit on their web-spinning abilities. 11
