  2. FOLKTALE princess Indumati King Vikram Betal: King Vikram mounted Betal on his shoulders and started walking. As soon as he took his frst step, Betal started another one of his stories. Many years ago, King Kanchannagar had a beautiful daughter named Indumati. The princes of many of the neighbouring kingdoms coveted to marry her. When her father started looking for a suitable bridegroom for Indumati, she put a condition before her father that she would only marry the suitor who would clear the test given by her. The king gladly agreed. The test was extremely dangerous and hazardous. A royal announcement was made in all the kingdoms about Princess Indumati's wedding and the test that the suitors required to pass. A young handicapped man named Kurupshana heard it. His mother had died soon after his birth. His father had remarried and his stepmother despised and ill-treated him. Kurupshana decided to go to Kanchannagar. Many princes were gathered there to hear out the details of the test. The king’s minister came and announced, “Dear all, as you know that you will only be eligible to win the hand of our princess if you clear the test that she has laid out for you. The test is that you have to climb the twenty foot wall and jump down into the three-tiered cage of sharp knives. The important thing is, while doing so, you must not injure yourself. There should not be a single scratch on your body from the blades of the knives." When the suitors had a look at the high wall and the narrow space between the sharp knives, all of them retreated to their seats. It looked as though no suitor was willing to take the test. Kurupshana Chandradeep and expressed his desire to appear for the test. He went up the wall, took a good look at the tiers of knives and jumped down. He landed between the knives without getting even the slightest bruise on his body. He then walked towards the king and the princess and said "Your Majesty! I may have cleared the test, but I do not wish to marry the princess. I only wanted to take the challenge and now I know that I have succeeded in doing what the others could not do." He humbly bowed down before the king and left for home. Betal ended his story and asked Vikramaditya “King! Don’t you think that Kurupshana behaved like a fool? If he had no intention of marrying the princess, why did he decide to undergo the test? And after having succeeded in the test, why did he not want to marry her?" Vikram replied, “Kurupshana was a handicapped young man. He was aware his handicap bothered his stepmother. He wished that she changed her opinion about him. He could now tell her that where people with no handicap had failed, he came out as a victor. He did not undergo the test with the hope of marrying the princess.” King Vikram further added, “Kurupshana also knew that if he married her, he would one day have to take the reins of the kingdom. But as a ruler, he would not be able to protect his kingdom. So, it would not be a wise decision for him to marry her. He was indeed a very wise person, not a fool." Betal heard the answer and few back to the tree. King Vikram drew his sword and went after Betal once again. fnally walked up to King Chandradeep of 1

  4. CASA & ASA Discoveries and Inventions Who discovered fre? How did the control of fire lead to human evolution? The control and manipulation of fre was a turning point for human evolution. It gave birth to cooked food. Cooking allowed the early man to consume more calories and, as a result, to develop larger brains. Control of fre also helped one to ward of preda- tors and venture into harsh climates. When lightning struck a forest and created fre, it probably intrigued and amazed the early man. Many scientists believe that the controlled use of fre was most likely frst achieved by our ancient human ancestor known as Homo erectus, and not Homo sapiens or Neanderthals as commonly believed. Homo erectus became the frst hominin to master fames by accident, possibly in order to cook their food. PONDERING CORNER Deja Vu? What is Do you ever feel like you were in any particular place even though you have never visited that place before? Or you thought that a particular face seemed familiar even though you were meeting that person for the very frst time? These strange experiences are called 'deja vu'. The term deja vu is a french word that means ‘already seen’. There is a very logical and scientifc explanation to these ‘unnatural’ experiences. It is actually an abnormality of our memory! When we dream, we usually forget what the dream was all about but it is nonetheless stored in our brains. During deja vu, it is these dreams that mysteriously surface up without us realizing that we had dreamt it sometime back! When an event occurs, our brain makes two images of the same event simultaneously. When this happens, we experience it as if we have already been there in the event once before hence giving rise to the strange phenomenon.
