  2. FOLKTALE Panchatantra: The Maerchant's Son When ‘You get what you are destined to’ went into the watchman’s house, he entered the wrong room by mistake. This was the room of Vinayawati, the watchman’s daughter. She saw ‘You get what you are destined to’ and in the dark mistook him for her friend. She entertained him and talked to him but the man was silent. Finally, she said, “Why aren’t you talking to me?” The merchant’s son replied, “You get what you are destined to.” Vinayawati realised at once that this was some other man. She threw him out of the house. Then, one day, the merchant’s son was roaming around when he came across a marriage procession and joined it. The bridegroom’s name was Varakeerti. Just as the marriage ceremony was about to begin, a mad elephant appeared. Everyone was terrifed and ran to save themselves. ‘You get what you are destined to’ immediately rushed to the rescue of the bride. He drove the elephant away. On returning, When Varakeerti saw ‘You get what you are destined to’ holding the hands of his soon-to-be wife, he was furious. He wanted to throw him out of the place. But, the bride said that since ‘You get what you are destined to’ had saved her life, she would marry only him and nobody else. This girl turned out to be the same princess, Chandrawati, who had mistaken ‘You get what you are destined to’ for the prince she had fallen in love with and had later thrown him out of the palace on learning the truth. The whole city, including the princess’s father, the king, heard the news of the decision she had taken. The princess married ‘You get what you are destined to’ and they lived happily ever after. Finally, the merchant’s son did get what he was destined to. Truly, destiny plays a great role in our lives. A long time ago, there was a merchant who had a son. The son was fond of poetry. Once, he bought a book of poetry. He liked one line of a poem so much that he kept reciting it. He recited it so many times that everyone started calling him by that name. It was ‘You get what you are destined to.’ One day, there was a festival in the city. A beautiful princess called Chandrawati also attended this festival. There, she saw a handsome prince and at once fell in love with him. She told her maid to arrange a meeting with the prince. The maid went to the prince and conveyed the princess’s message. The prince agreed to meet the princess. Then, the maid told him details about how and where the meeting would happen. “Come to the white palace after it is dark,” she said. “You will see a rope hanging from one of the windows. Just climb it and you will reach the princess’s room.” But when the time came for the prince to go, he backed out. Around the same time, ‘You get what you are destined to’ was wandering around, and came close to the palace. He saw a rope hanging and climbed it, entering the princess’s room. It was dark inside and the princess could not see the face of the man. She thought that he was the prince. She treated him royally and talked to him, but the man remained silent. “Why aren’t you speaking?” the princess asked him. “You get what you are destined to,” the merchant’s son said. Hearing his voice and taking a closer look at his face, the princess realised that this man was not the prince that she had fallen in love with. She was furious and told him to leave at once. Then, ‘You get what you are destined to’ went to a nearby temple to sleep. The watchman of the temple told him that he could sleep in his quarter that was behind the temple.

  4. CASA & ASA Who Discoveries and Inventions discovered America? on the shores of what is now known as New- foundland, Canada. They did not stay for long as their relationship with Native North Ameri- cans grew hostile. A fact we often forget when investigating the mystery of who discovered America frst is, that when all these diferent explorers came to America, there were already people there! The frst settlers to come to America were in fact, immigrants. Studies suggest that Native Amer- icans, as we know them, have genetic markers connecting them to Asian roots. During the last Ice Age, research shows that there existed a land bridge where there is now the Berring Strait – connecting Asia to North America. There have also been claims in the past that explorers from Asia and Ireland landed on the shores of America before Columbus and Ves- pucci. However, these claims are still under exploration. There are several beliefs in regard to who discovered America frst. Most people are aware of the journeys of Christopher Colum- bus and how he was the frst sailor to make the round trip voyage around the Atlantic. Howev- er, despite his nautical achievements, was he the frst? The most commonly known and believed story is that of Christopher Columbus – an Italian navigator and explorer who landed on the shores of 'The New World' in 1492. His discovery is signifcant as it opened up Ameri- ca to colonization at the hands of European powers. However, the history of America is not as simple as that. Research has shown that Columbus was one of the last explorers to "dis- cover" America. Almost 500 years before him, a group of Vikings, led by Leif Eriksson, landed 3

  6. Sunken Ships and Treasures Till date, a large number of ships have been lost in the seas and oceans of the world. Let us learn about some of the famous treasures discovered on sunken ships, far below in the bed of the ocean. The oldest known discovered shipwreck, the ‘Uluburun’, dates back to 1300 B.C. The Uluburun treasure was discovered in the period from 1984 to 1992 and consisted of valuable artifacts including the golden seal of Egyptian Queen Nefertiti, precious stones and weapons of ancient times. In 1622, a Spanish ship ‘Atocha’ carrying a rich bounty fell prey to a strong hurricane and sank. The Atocha treasure was discovered by a famous treasure hunter, Mel Fischer, who found it after almost two decades of hunting. Fischer located the wreck of the Atocha near Florida. The Atocha treasure discovery listed gold bars, silver- ware, invaluable jewels and some 20 bronze cannons, again worth millions of dol- lars. In 2009, salvagers found the remains of ‘Victory’ that sunk in 1744 in the English Channel after encountering a ferocious storm. It was loaded with lakhs of gold coins and other valuable items. Till date only 41 of the ship’s cannons have been found, while the rest of the treasure— the gold —still remains undiscovered and shrouded in mystery. In 1857, ‘S.S. Central America’ succumbed to a hurricane and sank along with almost 600 passengers and crew members. It is believed that S.S America was carrying more than 30,000 pounds of gold. The gold was found somewhere near Indonesia in the late 1980s by a group from Ohio. The ‘Black Swan’ treasure is one of the most recently discovered treasures. In 2007, a mother lode of silver and gold coins was discovered from the ocean foor near Spain. It is believed that this treasure belonged to the Spanish ship, ‘Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes,’ however, it is not confrmed.

A:Aye to aye! AMUSING NEWS A Pirate's Fake Eyepatch Pirate's didn't wear eyepatches because one eye was injured! The eye patch could be used to pre- pare one eye to see in the dark, so when they would go below deck they could swap the eye patch from one eye to the other and see with the eye that has already adjusted to the low light- ning. This helped them see in the dark quickly.

  8. comic story einstien iyengar Simple Chemical Reactions “You know the only thing common between him and you is the dorky hair” said Martin, Eeshan’s classmate. “Lay off Martin!” retorted Nitin. With the last bell of the day going off, the children rushed out. Eeshan always got a ride in Nitin’s car till his house. “You look lost” asked Eeshan. Nitin said “It is this Baba in Allepey. Suddenly his popularity has grown leaps and bounds. All the wealthy people worship him. My mother is a staunch believer but my father is not supportive. It is because of this disagreement that my parents argue every day.“ Eeshan replied “A human being deserves respect not worship. Let’s go see this Baba today.” Nitin said “My mother will be going today. He has a gathering in the evening. She will be happy to take us along.” 7

  9. In the evening the two of them went with Nitin’s mother to watch the magic of the Baba. As a huge crowd gathered to watch the spectacle, Eeshan carefully looked at the Baba playing tricks. Baba claimed that he could cure Lakshmi of her disease. Lakshmi was a farmer’s daughter who couldn’t afford a medical care. Baba took a coconut shell and placed it before Lakshmi. He mumbled some hymns and threw water on the coconut which created a fizz. Out of nowhere a ladoo appeared from the fumes, which the Baba gave to Lakshmi. He told her to eat it and assured her father that she would be fine soon. People marveled and clapped at the sight. Next Baba called a wealthy man forward and said “I had asked this man to keep this holy coin with him in the place where he keeps his money. He has not donat- ed enough to the poor and the needy. This coin with the inscription of God will become tainted once I rub holy water on it. This will show him and all of you that God doesn’t acknowledge his money and this man will soon become a pauper.” 8

  10. Baba dipped his cloth in the holy water and kept the coin over it. The coin turned green after Baba mumbled hymns for a while. People were amazed to see the sight and the man fell on the Baba’s feet. Baba spoke “You must donate! Give money to the poor. Start by donating to the ashram’s trust fund and helping people here.” The man agreed to help Baba and people marveled and clapped. Baba retreated to his tent blessing everyone. “See! He really does communicate with God.” Nitin’s mom said “We must come again!” “Oh we certainly will aunty” said Eeshan. As Eeshan and Nitin walked back to the car Nitin asked “Do you really believe this?” Eeshan smiled and replied “He is a genius alright but not even remotely close to God. We will visit him again and tomorrow we will set everything right!” Before going with Nitin, Eeshan wore a long sleeve shirt and took a bottle of liquid with him. He also took a copper coin, a coconut and a Ladoo. When Nitin picked him up he was puzzled to see Eeshan dressed this way and carrying the things with him. Nitin’s mother asked “Son, why do you have these things with you?” Eeshan smiled and said “You will see!” 9

  11. When they reached the place Eeshan went right in the front and faced the crowd. The crowd was waiting for Baba to come out of his tent. Eeshan loudly said “I would like to tell you that God visited me last night in my dream and said he was sad at how people were believing crooks in the name of God. He went to Lakshmi and placed the coconut in front of her. He took the liquid out of the bottle and threw it on the coconut. As the fumes went up, Eeshan produced the Ladoo out of thin air. People gasped at the sight and Eeshan explained “This is no magic. The liquid is vinegar and when I threw it on the coconut the fumes were produced because of a simple chemical reaction be- tween the vinegar and the baking soda on top of the coconut, that produced carbon dioxide gas. You were all distracted by the fumes so none of you saw me produce the Ladoo hidden in my shirt sleeve.” He placed the coin on a wet cloth and started reciting poems. When the coin turned green people gasped again. “Must say the Baba’s favorite ingredient is vinegar. The coin turned green be- cause of copper oxide produced from a reaction between copper and the acid of the vinegar. He is not Godly, he is just good at chemistry!”

  12. The people realized their foolishness and chased the Baba to the police station. They thanked Eeshan for his intelligence and showing everyone the right way. Ni- tin’s mother said “Thank you son for making me realize the importance of logic” Einstein Iyengar was a hero again! Pondering Corner Who are pirates? When you think of the image of a pirate, an image of an evil seaman with an eye patch over one eye, a cutlass in his hand and shoddy clothes appears before your eyes. Well, these so-called ‘Robin Hoods’ of the sea really exist- ed once and were very powerful in their times. The only diference was that unlike the real Robin Hood, most of them were extremely ruthless and committed the act of piracy just for their selfsh gains. Piracy began more than 2000 years ago in Ancient Greece, when sea robbers started focking around the trad- ing routes. These sea robbers challenged all those who passed from there and looted them mercilessly. Piracy was at its peak between 1620 and 1720. That is why this period is also known as the golden age of piracy. During this time, there have been diferent types of pirates, such as privateers, buccaneers, and corsairs. Privateers were lawful pirates who were permitted by their government to attack and plunder the ships of enemy nations. The privateers in return shared their profts with the government. Francis Drake was England’s most famous privateer who shared his profts with Elizabeth I, and was knighted for his services. In the 1660s, Captain Henry Morgan, was commissioned by England to fght against Spain. Captain Morgan continued his ‘legal piracy’ for about a decade and shared his loot with England. Later he took retirement and lived out his days in honor, in Jamaica. Most of the seamen took to piracy in the hope of becoming rich and leading a better life. However, they had to abide by some stringent rules enforced by the captain of the ship. These rules were often strict and breaking them meant punishment by death. If a pirate was found stealing from his comrades or deserting during battle, he was marooned on a desert island.
