  2. FOLKTALE Once Emperor Akbar thought of a playing a trick on Birbal. He gave one egg to each of his ministers before Birbal reached the court. When Birbal arrived in the court, the Emperor told everybody about a strange dream that he saw the previous night. He said, “A divine being appeared in my dream and said that I would be able to judge the honesty of my ministers by giving them a simple task. I must ask them to go to the royal garden pond and get an egg from there. Those who are honest, will fnd an egg there and those who are not, shall return empty handed.” Then the Emperor directed all of his courtiers to go to the royal garden pool and bring back an egg. One by one, all his ministers went to the pond and returned with the egg, which the Emperor had previously given them. Birbal also went to the pond and looked around for an egg. He even jumped into the pond but failed to fnd any egg. He soon realized that the Emperor was trying to play a trick on him. So, he thought for a while and then entered the court crowing like a rooster. The Emperor asked him to stop making that irritating noise and produce the egg. Birbal smiled and replied that only hens lay eggs, and as since he was a rooster, he could not produce an egg. Akbar burst out laughing and understood that it was not easy to outwit his clever minister. Akbar Birbal: The Rooster and the Hen 2

  4. CASA & ASA Discoveries and Inventions Who invented the periscope? A periscope is an instrument of observation which is used when the observer is unable to get a direct view of their surroundings. Using two mirrors angled at 45 degrees to each other, they are able to observe objects indirectly. The most common use of the periscope is in submarines. The earliest version of the periscope was created by Johannes Hevelius in 1647. He called it the 'polemoscope'. Hippolyte Marie-Davy invented the frst naval periscope in 1854 which consisted of two mirror angled at 45 degrees to each other. This was later perfected for use in World War I by Sir Howard Grubb. An important development came in the form of the 'Gundlach Rotary Periscope' pat- ented by Rudolph Gundlach in 1936. This allowed the periscope to rotate 360 degrees to allow a better view for the observer. Periscopes have come a long way and now also have night vision as well as magnifca- tion and telescopic capabilities. Fun with Words

  6. spot ten differences Pondering Corner Can Dolphins Talk? It has been long thought that dolphins whistle in order to communicate with each other. Instead of vocal cords (which is how humans communicate), dolphins use tissue vibrations in their nasal cavities to produce sounds. These noises have always been believed to be whistles, however new research suggests the sound is diferent. Structures called 'phonic lips', which are inside a dolphin's nasal cavity are incharge of the sound. However, these sounds cannot be confused with 'talking'. They do communicate using these sounds, but not to the complex degree that humans do. The dolphin's ancestors lived on land more that 40 million years ago and made sounds using the vocal folds in their larynx. When they began adapting to become to the fully aquatic mammals we know today, they lost the vocal folds but adapted in other ways. The 'phonic lips' in their noses began to play the role that vocal folds did for their ancestors.

  7. comic story einstien iyengar The Force of Friction Friction is a force acting on the opposite side of the movement of an object. The topic under discussion in science class was friction. Sir, does friction come into play when we are walking? 7

  8. Yes, Nitin! Sir, does friction depend on the type of surface too? Certainly! When you put oil or smoothen the surface of the road, you slip. This is because the friction is less. 8

  9. Nitin and Eeshan were walking back home. Nitin took two bananas out of his school bag and gave one to Eeshan. This banana peel is so smooth. So by what Sir said it will reduce the frictional force between the sole of our shoe and the road. No wonder people slip on a banana peel! 9

  10. The boys heard a commotion. A man was running from the crowd and had a handbag in his hand. The crowd was shouting, “Stop that thief!” Eeshan threw both the banana peels in the path of the thief who was running their way. As soon as the thief stepped on the peels he fell. The crowd gave the thief a sound beating. A man took the purse from the thief’s hand and gave it back to the old lady. Eeshan and Nitin were ecstatic with the money for ice cream but they were happier helping someone. The man said, “Here is a hundred rupee note for helping my mother.” 10

  11. My uncle took us out on to a boat to show us the dolphins. We woke up very early in the morning to take the boat out into the water. We were sleepy and cranky and couldn't understand why we had to step out so early. The sun was slowly rising and we heard a splash... Facts About Dolphins Dolphins have to be conscious when they breathe, unlike human beings; so a dolphin is never fully asleep. These marine animals have a nostril on the top of their head, called a blow hole, which is used for breathing. They often just raise their head above water to look for danger. This is called spy hopping. Dolphins communicate by making clicking, squeaking, squawking and whistling sounds. Each dolphin has its own distinct sound.
