2. FOLKTALE Anasi, Firefly and the Tiger Anansi the spider was friends with the frefy and they were often found together. One day, the frefy invited Anansi to join him to hunt eggs. Every time the frefy went over the feld and spread his wings, the place would get illuminated and he could immediately see the eggs lying under the grass. Anansi would immediately pounce and pick up the eggs and put them in his pouch. This continued for a while and every time Anansi would collect the eggs as soon as the frefy spotted them. Anansi collected many eggs, but did not give a single one to the frefy. When the frefy asked him, he said that he had reached the eggs frst so they belonged to him. After quite some time, Anansi was tired of carrying the huge sack of eggs and could barely move. The frefy, who was annoyed with Anansi’s selfshness, few away leaving Anansi in the dark. Anansi was scared and while walking in the dark he came across a house. “Dear godfather, can I come in?” asked Anansi, though unsure of who the house belonged to. “Who is it?” the tiger growled from inside. “It is Anansi, your godson,” Anansi answered. The tiger had been tricked several times in the past by Anansi. He also knew that he never had a godson. The tiger wanted to teach Anansi a lesson and called him inside his house. The tiger took the eggs from Anasi and boiled them in a copper kettle. Once the eggs were boiled, the whole of the tiger’s family sat and ate them hungrily. The tiger ofered some eggs to Anansi, but Anansi was scared and refused the ofer. Then, the tiger put a huge lobster into the kettle and covered it with some eggshells. He told Anansi that there were more eggs in the kettle and he could eat them if he felt hungry. When everyone was asleep, Anansi slowly went to the kettle and put his hand inside the kettle. The lobster pinched Anansi hard and he screamed out loud. “What is the matter Anansi?” asked the tiger. “Nothing at all, it’s just a dog fea,” Anansi replied. The tiger sat up angrily. “How dare you complain of dog feas in my lovely house?” he growled and leaped towards Anansi. Anansi was terrifed and ran for his life and never looked back. He never found the eggs ever again.

Every Thursday she steps out of the house very early in the morning. She literally tip-toes to her car, then looks to see if anyone’s watch- ing, gets into her car and drives off. She only comes back home around sunset. Where does she go? 5

7. We’ll try and find out! On Thursday after school, when they came back to Nitin’s house, Ekta aunty had not returned home. They waited together in his room. Shortly after six-thirty, her car finally came back in. Eeshan looked at her go inside the house through his binoculars. 6

8. After an hour or so, when it was sufficiently dark outside, Eeshan and Nitin crept into her front yard. Eeshan slowly crawled to her front doorstep and observed the shoes she’d worn that day, which she’d left just outside the door. He nodded to Nitin, a signal that it was time to go back. At Nitin’s house, Eeshan spent a few minutes accessing the internet through his friend’s computer. 7

9. I know where Ekta aunty goes. Her shoe soles had very deep red soil on them. What does red soil have to do with this? Remember when we learnt in geography class that red soil indicates presence of iron? The soil on her shoes was a very dark, rich red. It could only have come from an area extremely rich in iron. Within a 60 km radius of this place, there is a place with many iron ore mines.

10. Yelakad! Yes, when I looked through the binoculars, I saw a little blue stamp on her wrist. This suggests that she went to some institute with a great deal of security. In Yelakad, there is only one such place. A mental health institution. Obviously, she goes there every week to visit a loved one, maybe one of her parents or grandparents. She tip- toes because she doesn’t want people to find out about it. 9

Combined with dehydration, it could lead many problems. You could get a heat stroke even while you are in the house. One of the simplest safeguards against heatstrokes is to avoid the peak afternoon sun. In the afternoon, with the sun shining the most, you are most prone to a heat stroke. Keeping your head covered is another simple yet efective way to reduce the chances of getting a heat stroke. Dehydration can play a huge role in escalating the symptoms of a heat stroke. Make sure to drink lots of fuids, preferably water, lemonade or coconut water. Avoid drinks with cafeine such as aerated drinks, as those dehydrate rather than rehydrate you. Stick to light natural fabrics such as cotton or linen when dressing yourself this summer. Avoid wearing tight clothes that restrict air circulation and for the skin to breathe. Wear light colours which refect the light rather than absorb and trap it. Some common symptoms of heatstrokes to look out for are – dry, hot and red skin, rapid breath- ing, throbbing headache, nausea, dizziness and confusion. If you develop any of these symptoms after playing outside, make sure to change into loose clothing and wet your skin to cool it down. If symptoms progress, be safe and go see your doctor.
