  3. Computer Center Purpose To increase reading skills while using technology. Rules and Expectations • Stay in your seat. • Stay focused on your assignment. • You may ONLY work on SuccessMaker. (Internet and Games are prohibited.)

  4. Independent reading center Purpose This is the time where you can relax and enjoy reading on your own. Rules and Expectations • You are responsible for choosing a book 100 points below your lexile level. • After immediately choosing your book quietly, you must sit down and read for the duration of time allowed for that center. • Stay focused and DO NOT become a distraction to other students. • Make sure all work is complete and try your BEST. • If and when you choose to break the rules YOU WILL BE REMOVED QUICKLY and CONSEQUENCES WILL FOLLOW.

  5. Reciprocal teaching Purpose This center is useful for you to develop FCAT-styled questions, “why”, and “what” questions. Also short and long response questions can be created. Rules and Expectations • Read the directions carefully. (If you need to read them twice please do.) Ask a group member if you don’t understand. • Stay focused and think critically. • Complete your work and do your best.

  6. Writing center Purpose This center is where you can become creative and express yourself in writing. Rules and Expectations • Be creative and share ideas with people in your group. • Stay focused and complete all your work. • Never give up or say you can’t!!! • Use the dictionary or thesaurus to help you spell words. • Please PROOF READ your work. • Write neatly and do not rush through your work. • Remember to use punctuation correctly. • Make sure your work is organized and complete.

  7. Guided reading Purpose This is a time when we (teacher & students) can sit, read, discuss, and learn more about a reading selection. You can practice reading silently as well. Rules and Expectations • Be ready to participate when questions are asked concerning the reading passage. (You must participate in group discussion). • REMEMBER to use the color coded system for guided reading. (This is mandatory). • Read silently and DO NOT pretend that you are reading. • Complete the assignment at your center.

  8. Listening center Purpose This center is where you listen to an audio book that models reading fluency. Rules and Expectations • Select a book quickly and begin listening. • Make sure you are following along with the book with your finger as the book is being read. • You are ONLY allowed to listen to the audio book. • If you are caught listening to the radio, cd, or anything other than the audio book, extreme consequences will follow your actions!!! (So make wise choices)

  9. Purpose This center helps you increase your vocabulary skills and word knowledge. Rules and Expectations Make sure that you know how to pronounce the word and know what the word means before leaving the center. Make sure that you complete your assignment. Stay focused and on task. Use the thesaurus and dictionary to guide you when completing your assignment. Try to use some of the words in your everyday conversations. Vocabulary Center

  10. Grammar/Technology Center Purpose This center is where you will learn the composition of sentences, words, and punctuation. You will also use the promethean board to complete activities. Rules and Expectations • Remain seated at all times. • Make sure there is only one person at the promethean board at a time. • Use the worksheets provided in the binder, but always write on your own paper.

  11. Summary Learning Centers are important for all students. Now that you know the purpose and expectations, it is your responsibilityto adhere to the expectations and guidelines that are set. Cleaning up your area is also very important. Be respectful and courteous to each other. Please keep all insults, “cracking”, and “roasting” to yourself; its not important in the classroom setting. Education and learning is our goal.

REVIEW Directions: Answer each question True or False. • Listening to the radio at the listening center is appropriate. • Participating in discussion during guided reading is a great way to show that you comprehend the passage. • Following the color coded system during guided reading is not important. • I am allowed to play solitaire or use the internet while at the computer station. • Independent reading is when you read with a group. • Writing neatly and using proper punctuation at the writing center is recommended. • FCAT based questions, why, and what questions are developed at the reciprocal teaching center. • I need to know how to pronounce the words and know the meaning of the words at the vocabulary center. • At the grammar/technology center, I can work with my partner at the promethean board. • There are seven centers total in the rotation.
