  1. PERIPATUS Onychophora Dr. N. SRINIVAS LECTURER IN ZOOLOGY PR GOVT. COLLEGE (AUTONOMOU) KAKINADA

  2. PERIPATUS Peripatus is a terrestrial animal mostly confined to humid habitats.

  3. PERIPATUS • First reported by Guilding • Confined to onychophora by Moseley the presence of trachea

  4. PERIPATUS

  5. External Morphology • Body is caterpillar-like soft, elongated, bilaterally symmetrical • 1.4 cm to 15.00 cm in length

  6. External Morphology External segmentation is indistinct and marked only by the presence of paired appendages

  7. External Morphology • Body is divisible into head and trunk. • Head bears a pair of antennae, a pair of oral papillae, a pair of mandibles. • Trunk bears 14-41 appendages

  8. External Morphology • Appendages are hallow, consists of two parts 1. Leg and foot • Leg is wide hallow structure, ends with spiniferous pad. • Spiniferous pad continues as clawed foot.

  9. Commissionerate of Collegiate Education Characters • A nephridiopore lies at the base of each leg helps in excretion . • Body wall is dermo-muscular • Body cavity is haemocoel • Glands are present in the body wall.

  10. Characters • Heart is tubular with ostia. • Blood vascular system without blood vessels. • Respiration is by the trachea

  11. Characters • Only the muscles of mandibles are striated and the rest are smooth muscles. • Nervous system and sense organs are similar to annelids and arthropods • Exhibits Viviparity .

  12. Commissionerate of Collegiate Education Affinities • Affinities with annelids: • Presence of thin transparent cuticle on the body • Segmental arrangement of nephridia • Absence of distinct head • Hallow appendages resemble the parapodia.

  13. Affinities • Affinities with arthropods: • Appendages modified into jaws • Body cavity haemocoel • Respiration through trachea • Presence of a pair of salivary glands • Blood without colour.

  14. Affinities • All segments are of similar in nature • Velvet like body wall • Mouth with a jaw • Absence of external segmentation
