Timeline of Victims • August 30, 1888 -- Fire breaks out at the Shadwell Dry Dock and burns until late the next morning. • August 31, 1888 -- Polly Nichols killed in Bucks Row • September 8, 1888 -- Annie Chapman killed in Hanbury Street. • September 30, 1888 -- Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes killed at 1:00 and 1:45 am, respectively. • November 9, 1888 -- Mary Kelly killed in Miller's Court.

Polly Nichols • Lived in the Lambeth, St Giles, Strand, and Mitcham workhouse (last at Lambeth) • Father, ex-husband, blacksmith boyfriend, • Heavy drinker • Found a job as a domestic servant • Last night, not enough money to find lodging • Last seen alive in a drunken condition, 2:30AM • Murdered in Bucks Row, Whitechapel

The Details… • Found on her back—others had walked by • Even the policeman assumed it was just an “unfortunate” passed out • Throat was cut twice, left to right, through the spinal cord • Abdomen jaggedly cut open in several places • Thumb-size bruise on her lower right jaw • Not heavily covered in the newspapers

  5. Questions… • Why did passers-by ignore the body of Mary Nichols? • Why did the police take little notice of the murder? • What early conclusions can you draw about the first “Whitechapel Murder”?

  6. 2. Annie Chapman • Suffered from Tuberculosis and Syphilis • Heavy drinker • Husband (dead) and 2x boyfriends (Sivvey & Stanley) • Prostitute • Lives at a lodging house for 300 people • Sighted with “a customer” before being found dead.

The details…& Questions • Read Source 7, page 51 • What similarities or differences are there between the two murders? • What reasons do critics have for believing the letter was written by some crank instead of the murderer? • Why did Jack the Ripper wait so long to send the letter? • What evidence is there that he will kill again?

  8. 3. Elizabeth Stride • Prostitute • Husband, boyfriend • Heavy drinker • Lives at a lodging house • Leaves early in the morning and is found dead later

  9. 4. Kate Eddowes • Husband, boyfriend • Drinking problem • Sept 29: She is arrested for being drunk and disorderly (imitating a fire engine) and put in the cells. • Sept 30: released and found dead 10 minutes from the station

  11. 5. Mary Jane Kelly • Husband (dead), boyfriend • Prostitute, brothel and, later, streets • Drinking problem • November 8: seen singing in the street, completely drunk • November 9: found mutilated on her bed
