  1. Lesson 5: Investigating Lunar Phases

  2. Lunar Phases The moon goes through a cycle of changes in its apparent shape which are referred to as “Phases.” We see these phases or changes as the moon orbits Earth. The Moon’s orbital period can be understood in two ways: Sidereal month – time it takes the Moon to orbit Earth one complete revolution which is about 27.3 days long Synodic month – time it takes between successive repetitions of the same lunar phase (new moon to new moon) which is about 29,5 days long

  3. Lunar Phases As the Moon orbits Earth its cycle is divided into eight equal parts, which each lasting a little over half a week. • New Moon • Waxing Crescent • First Quarter • Waxing Gibbous • Full Moon • Waning Gibbous • Third Quarter • Waning Crescent Waxing: illuminated portion of the Moon is continually growing Waning: illuminated portion of the Moon is continually shrinking
