Why does my child need a six year plan? • An opportunity to have an overview of your child’s secondary education. • Time to plan for taking the required classes and the electives. • An opportunity to ask questions and be more informed about your child’s preparation for post secondary education.

  3. What is a six-year plan? • A six-year plan is YOUR child’s guide to a successful junior high and high school career. • It allows YOU to make sure you obtain all the credits you need to graduate. • It is also flexible, and may change each year. • All the information you need to create a six-year plan can be found in the MISD course register located on the MISD websiteunder Guidance & Counseling. http://www.midlandisd.net/Page/366

  4. ENDORSEMENTS Before a student enters 9th grade they must choose an Endorsement. This is a requirement for graduation. There are 5 Endorsements you may choose. Arts and Humanities (Art, Music and Florists). Business and Industry (Finance, Accounting, Manufacturing, IT, and Agriculture). Public Services (Hotel Management, Teaching, Social Worker and Psychology, and Law & Public Safety). STEM (Engineering, Computer Science). Multidisciplinary (Combination of classes from the First 4).

PROGRAMS OF STUDY • Students will also choose a Program of Study • Does NOT exempt students from the required courses for graduation. • These courses are electives and will give students a strong foundation in a particular area. • EXAMPLES OF PROGRAMS OF STUDY: • Student wants to go to college and study Engineering. This student will take electives related to Engineering. • Students can also take Career & Technology courses (CTE) as Programs of Study. Examples of this include: • Health related careers (nursing) • ROTC • Auto Mechanics • Cosmetology

  6. MISD Academies • Petroleum Academy • Health Sciences Academy • Business/I.T. Academy • Law Enforcement Academy • These academies offer certification opportunities for students • Further information will be available during your student’s 8th grade year.

  7. STAAR • State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness • For High School Credit Courses the Assessment is the End Of Course Exam, or EOC.

  8. SchooLinks is a modern, college and career readiness platform to prepare students for what comes after graduation. • For middle school students, SchooLinks helps them begin to discover their interests and strengths.

  9. SchooLinks at Midland Independent School District is accessible by 6th-8th grade students and their parents. • All of the SchooLinks features are designed with students in mind to help them become career, college, and life ready. SchooLinks features are incredibly user-friendly and content can be easily comprehended by 6th-8th grade students. • Students have logged on through their CLEVER account. PARENT LOGIN FOR SCHOOLINKS • Go to www.schoolinks.com/login • Each MISD student has TWO guardian accounts that can be claimed • Guardian Account #1: Your email/username is midlandisd-{student number}-a • Guardian Account #2: Your email/username is midlandisd-{student number}-b • Your temporary password is {student number}{MMDD of student DOB} Example: if a student's number is 123456 and their birthday is January 8th (01/08) • Email/Username is: midlandisd-123456-aOR midlandisd-123456-b • Password is: 1234560108

  11. What classes do I need to take in high school? • Your first step is deciding what Endorsement plan you want to follow. Your Endorsement plan determines what Program of Study you need for graduation. • Every student is on the Foundation Plan. • Students can earn a distinguished level of achievement. This level of achievement is required to be considered for the top 10% for College Admission. • Performance acknowledgements can also be achieved. Work with your High School Counselor to learn how your student can earn these acknowledgements. .

Grade Point Averaging Entering Freshman Class of 2012-2013 and Beyond GRADE CORE ENHANCED/PRE-AP/AP PLEASE NOTE: Enhanced grade points are forfeited if a student is removed from an Enhanced (B/T or Pre AP, AP) course before the completion of the semester. The student will receive grade points for the course to which the student is assigned on.

  13. Grade Point Averaging EnteringFreshman Class of 2012-2013 and Beyond CORE ENHANCED Any Course designated as a Fourth Year Math or Science And taken as such will be calculated in the GPA.

  14. CREDITS! • You need 26 credits to graduate, 22 foundation courses plus four (4) electives in an endorsement. • There are some classes in junior high that will give you high school credit. • Starting in 9th grade, you get a credit for EVERY class you take. • Receiving a credit is based on two things: 1. A grade of 70 or higher 2. Your attendance ~ you must attend 90% of the time each semester. • If you take a class and are not awarded a credit, the only way to get that credit is to RETAKE the class.

Electives in Junior High* indicates a class that will give the student high school credit • Touch Systems Data Entry* • Investigating Human Services • Investigating Hospitality and Tourism Careers • Investigating ARTS/AV/TEC/ Com Careers • Investigating Careers • Robotics • Investigating (STEM) • Intro. Art • Band • Choir • Orchestra • Speech & Drama • Spanish I, II & III* • Art I* Electives are unique to each Junior High. Please attend the Parent Meeting on Monday, February 25 @ 6:30 P.M. for more information.

  17. What is a Pre AP Class? • A “Pre AP” class is taken in 7th – 10th grade and helps a student prepare for an AP class. • An Advanced Placement (AP) class is a rigorous course that is aligned with College Board’s Standards for College Success. These classes are taken in the 11th and 12th grades.

  18. How do I Know if my child should take a Pre AP class? • MISD has guiding criteria that gives us guidelines to let you know if your child would be prepared to take a Pre AP class. • The most important components are that the student is willing to: • attend class every day • do the work required • and ask for help when they don’t understand.

Junior High SchoolAP/Pre-AP Suggested Guidelines2018-2019 Pre-AP Social Studies, Science, Math, and/or English: * 7th grade: 65th Percentile Rank on 5th grade STAAR reading * 7th grade: 65th Percentile Rank on 6th grade STAAR reading * 7th grade: 65th Percentile Rank on 5th grade STAAR math * 7th grade: 65th Percentile Rank on 6th grade STAAR math * 85 final average in grade 6 math for Math 7 Pre-AP * 85 final average in grade 6 reading for all other Pre-AP content areas Foreign Language Guiding Criteria:  Pre-qualifying conditions for 7th graders taking Spanish I:   * 65th Percentile Rank on 6th grade STAAR reading * 85 in 6th grade ELA Important Notice: • Prior to taking the course, students and parents at all grade levels will sign an AP/Pre-AP Agreement which explains the rigor and expectations required. • Students at all grade levels must have a 80 average in each AP/Pre-AP course at the end of the first semester to automatically continue in that AP/Pre-AP course for the second semester. • If the student does not have a 80 average, the campus principal may consider extenuating circumstances and allow the student to continue in the course for the second semester on a probationary status.

Junior High SchoolAP/Pre-AP Suggested Guidelines2018-2019 Important Notice: • Prior to taking the course, students and parents at all grade levels will sign an AP/Pre-AP Agreement which explains the rigor and expectations required. • Students at all grade levels must have a 80 average in each AP/Pre-AP course at the end of the first semester to automatically continue in that AP/Pre-AP course for the second semester. • If the student does not have a 80 average, the campus principal may consider extenuating circumstances and allow the student to continue in the course for the second semester on a probationary status.

If your student is interested in Pre AP classes: • MISD is asking that you conference with your counselor and teacher for guidance. • Parents and students sign an enrollment agreement that states that your child will be in the class for at least three weeks before they can change their schedule. • This will give your student an opportunity to understand the expectations of the course. • Students who are testing for GT placement need to fill out a Pre AP contract as well.

  22. Important Dates!! • February 25th at 6:30 p.m. - Parent Night at all junior highs • March 8th - All 6th graders will visit the junior highs • March 18th-22nd - 7th grade counselors will visit elementary schools to talk with students about registering for classes
