  3. WTO BACKGROUND • GATT was set up after World War II • First forty years of existence • By the 1970s, some other issues were included in the GATT. • Subsequent setting up of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995.

Benefits of The WTO's Trading System • The system helps promote peace • Disputes are handled constructively • Rules make life easier for all • Freer trade cuts the costs of living • It provides more choice of products and qualities • Trade raises incomes • Trade stimulates economic growth • The basic principles make life more efficient • Governments are shielded from lobbying • The system encourages good government

  8. The system allows disputes to be • handled constructively • Could be a down side • Disputes to arise • A lot of international trade tension is reduced • Countries in dispute always aim to conform with the agreements

  9. A system based on rules rather than • power makes life easier for all • Made by consensus • Rich and poor countries alike have an equal right to challenge • Smaller countries enjoy more bargaining power, and life is simpler for bigger countries

The good effect from the WTO • The WTO is emphasis on the export sector where the country its open up it borders. • The WTO will make the countries under its gain globalization effect • Country can gain profit with the WTO • WTO policy was a landmark step in the direction of getting the government out of the corporation way.

  16. The bad effect from the WTO. • present tariff escalation for industrial and agriculture products. • There is an unequal development between the rural and urban sectors. • Differential and more favorable treatment is give to developing countries in certain areas.

  17. Cont… • The ultimate instrument for enforcement of right and obligations is trade retaliation for developing counties. • The WTO will not make us safer. • The WTO is destroying environment. • The WTO hurts poor, small countries in favor of rich powerful nations.

TRADE POLICY • are an exercise, mandated in the WTO agreements • It is use to examine any economic development among member countries trade and related policy • Any development have impact on the global trading system are also monitored • Two document are prepared: a policy statement by the government and detail report by the WTO secretariat

The government adoption this policies and strategies to ensure sustainability of growth had strengthened the Malaysian economy. • According to the trade policy review, Malaysia continues to focused on higher value added exports while shifting some of its manufacturing operations to China and encouraging services exports.

FUTURE DIRECTION AND STRATEGY • Increasing competitiveness trough productivity enhancement, raising the quality of the workforce and greater application of knowledge • stimulating private investment as well as attracting quality FDI. • promoting new sources of growth in the manufacturing and services sector. • pursuing effective macro-economic management with fiscal prudence

  29. For the medium-term, the Government is formulating new policy directions and strategic thrusts under the Third Industrial Master Plan (2006-2020), the Ninth Malaysia Plan (2006-2010) and the second phase of Vision 2020.

  31. YES, Malaysia get an advantage being one of the WTOs member. But on the same time, Malaysia need to be prudent on the policies designed into WTO agreement.

  32. Conclusion • WTO use several methods to provide special benefit to developing countries, but it do not concern on local industries. So, here government need to take action to protect our local industries. This can be the policies that our government made for our economics growth.
